Like a lot of things, there are some definite problems and safety issues with driving a motorcycle. But if it's something you really really like, that trumps all that. Jumping out of planes, getting wasted, things like that. They are unnecessary, but you wanna live your life too. However there are some advantages too.
Pros:
Gas mileage big time.
Fun aspect/cool aspect.
Chicks love em. Not even just the 'punk/alternative' type. The majority of girls love em. Dunno if your married or this means much to you, but there it is.
Much cheaper than a car.
Great in the summer.
Convenient for things like parking, small commutes, city travel.
Cons:
Definite safety risks. Even if you are the best driver in the world, the guy beside you may not be and all it takes is one accident.
Useless in Calgary for six to seven months a year. Not so much a con in warmer climates, but here you are. And obviously that can cut down on a lot of your savings.
Can be a little expensive to get started. You don't really need accessories or clothes when you buy a new car, but you will for the bike. The helmet is just the start.

^ I think the comment about women is funny. My daughter, and I have no idea where she got this idea, said that when I get a motorcycle "the babes are going to be all over you."

It's funny, cause it's true...
What did your wife say?! 'Oh honey, you don't need that.' That'd be a dead giveaway me and your daughter are correct.

My wife moved from dead set against to being 'OK' with it. That's why the thread got bumped after six (more) years!

As I said in my first comment, it comes to desire over logic.
Logic probably dictates you should not. But you are a human being. If you find it sexy, exhilarating, or a challenge you should take, you need to do it.
Or else you end up a guy afraid of handshakes and dog germs.
The pros and cons I listed above are useful, but it's all about the jumping from a plane metaphor.
It makes no sense. But if you wanna do it, you should do it.

Trust me, they aren't all over you when you get a bike. At least I never noticed a change, but they found me attractive even before I started riding.

Here's how the exchange between myself and my back doctor went last week
*Doctor sees my helmet*
Him: "I'd sell your motorcycle if I were you."
Me: "I hardly ever rid--"
Him: "Yeah, I'd definitely sell it as soon as possible. Maybe get a scooter."
Me; "I have a scooter, actually."
Him: "Sell it."

Sorry, if you are riding a trike, or a modified snow mobile (aka CanAm spider) you better have a health reason to be doing it. Why anyone would want to neuter the experience of riding a true motorcycle with one of those abominations is beyond me. They handle like garbage, especially trikes (I hear spiders are OK). They are slower, and they kill the entire essence of a motorcycle. Trike guy, is always the guy in the group that is....trike guy. Kinda like quad guy, riding with dirt bike guys.
But the big thing to me is you are taking on all the safety risks of a motorcycle (some say moreso on trikes as they are dangerous as fark in corners), giving up all of the performance advantages, and actually becoming massively slower for more than what you could buy a very nice used performance convertible for.
And worst of all, you become trike guy.

Yes.
You won't look as cool as you think. You'll look like a jack#ss with a death wish that I'll probably want to drive into the ditch, unless you're one of the 2% that don't drive like wackjobs, but even they can take a spill and seriously hurt themselves. Do it at your own risk but don't be one of those people who think it'll transform their image. It certainly hasn't for people I know.

I don't know why but I'm not into cars as I am to motorcycles. They're more sexy, slick, fast, independent, and fun.
