When he was examined by the case psychologist (maybe it was a psychiatrist, I don't recall), the psych. said that Fritzl was 'born to rape', and that he was surprised Fritzl held out as long as he did. So, clearly there are some mental issues there.

it may also be an attempt to keep him away from the general prison population, in which you'd assume he wouldn't last that long.

I was leaning towards ^^^. My guess was that was the reason why he pleaded out on all counts, to avoid a general prison population. Some kind of deal made with the prosecution perhaps.
