While only 4 at the time, I do actually have a good memory from those Olympics.

My mom volunteered for the olympics and actually is in the film "Cool Runnings" regarding the Jamaican bobsled team, for her efforts.

Furthermore her volunteering spirit is the reason that I volunteer my time now.

PS. Heidi and Howdy, while perceived as Uber-Lame 20 years later, are infinitely superior, present-day, to the contrived drivel/borderline fecal excrement that Vanoc has conceived as mascots for the 2010 Olympics.

Awful stuff.

Was it really 20 years ago? Wow. I spent the days developing the film for certain media outlets (ABC was our primary customer) and then evenings in the bar at the Calgary Tower, partying it up with athletes from around the world. Oh my, that was some of the most fun I have ever had. Meeting several of the Soviet athletes and having them drink us blind was an experience I'll never forget... if I can somehow remember those nights. The thing that stood out in my mind about the Calgary Olympics was the sense of community and friendship. It didn't matter where you were from, you were a Calgarian that week and we all just got along.

I have very fond memories of '88. I was a SAIT journalism student at the time, and SAIT shut down during the Olympics because SAIT res was used to house athletes. So I had nothing to do during the Olympics but hang around Calgary and take pictures. My wife was working full time as an RN, so we had the money to score tickets to a few events even. In hockey we saw Canada vs Poland in the preliminary round (a rather disappointing and scary 1-0 win) and Canada vs Czechoslovakia in the medal round (a 6-3 win). We had sensational seats for the Czech game ... about six rows up from the penalty boxes. We also had tickets to the figure skating exhibition and a couple freestyle ski events. It was definitely a time in my life that I would love to live over again.

It will be interesting to see how Vancouver represents itself in 2010. My prediction is that the games will be flawlessly run, professional, clean, elegant, but lacking the sense of fun and community that characterized the 88 games.

Also, there will be one or two incidents of weird protest actions and one or two unfortunate incidents of violence during the games - people on the street getting hurt, not athletes. And if Canada looses in the gold medal game there will be a riot and our nation will look like a bunch of chunderheads.

There will most likely be massive native protests, including the blockading of roads. Should be interesting to see how the government responds when nobody can get to Whistler on an important day.

Very interesting.

I also wonder what's going to happen with East Hastings. Maybe a big crackdown and influx of "undesireables" to the lower mainland surrounding areas? Or perhaps they just send them to the nearest big city. Hmmm... which one...

My thoughts as I recall at 11 years old:

Actually, even at 5 I remember on 2&7 they had a Commuity Calender, and in the top corner a number, which was a countdown to the 1988 Olympic host city announcement. The memories are fuzzy, but I recall the jumping celebration by Klein in I think Baden Baden Wset Germany when Calgary got the games.

Got a game used stick from some Canadian (can't recall the name, only a cup of coffee in the NHL) in the leadup Christmas time (1987) tournament of Canada vs Dynamo.

The leadup: Lake Bonavista billeted a bunch of Swiss athletes, so we had all sorts of Olympic stuff in playing hockey.

Annoyed that the public school kids had the entire Olympics off, the Catholic school kids didn't, but were allowed to be absent for going to events.

Robyn Perry went to the school I did, a year ahead. Out of nowhere really.

As for the games, saw two games, Sweden/Finland and the US vs someone. Still have those originla tickets that my dad won in the lottery.

Went to a couple bobsled events, but they were delayed thanks to the tropical conditions.

Team Canada with NHLer's on loan, vividly recall Andy Moog with the full itech clear visor of all things...first and last time that was ever seen or done in hockey.

Went down to Olympic Plaza a couple nights for all the fireworks after the medal presentations.

Pin trading. The full set that Shell had. Coke had a bunch of pins. The ABC pin, a bunch of Russian ones and all sorts of others...have them still somewhere at my parents house.

My dad got my brother and I one of Olympic Coins, I got the hockey http://cgi.ebay.com/1988-SILVER-PROO...ayphotohosting

I remember the closing ceremonies, and the crowd doing the wave with those candle lit, mini olympic torches.

After the Games, there was a sale of the 2 week used, or brand new extra Olympic gear. We picked up a small TV that worked up until a couple years ago, complete with a little olmypic logo badge on the front. My dad picked up a green Olympic Blazer, not worn, but oversupply, to be used by judges and the like.
Also, an extr aolympic ceremonies ponco, complete with the instruction card, mentioning to wear the poncho to make the design for the world to see.

Didn't get the Olympic Glasses from PetroCan at the time, but have since picked up a bunch of them, they came in all sizes, with the gold olmpic torch emblem and the rings.

Really a special time, glad I was at least old enough to enjoy it, if not likely not quite old enough to fully appreciate the honor of hosting a Games in my hometown.
It changed the city forever, thanks to the upgraded facilities, both venue wise such as the Dome, and the upgrades at the U of C, and the venues like the Oval (and high perfromance lab at the U of C) can directly be attributed to the sucess Canada has in 2010.

At the time, the best run, most profitable games ever. And the legacy has laid the groundwork 20 years later.

Now, at 31, I'm likely going to submit an application to volunteer for 2010 on the 20th anniversary tomorrow. Unlikely again in my lifetimes, at least one where I am young enough, will the Olympic Games be 1h away or closer. We'll see when push comes to shove, but I think in the right situation and right position there, it would be a once in a life time opportunity to contribute.

I wish I could've been more involved in 1988, just not old enough and I wasn't a Young Canadian. My uncle volunteered in 1988 as a driver for diginarties and media and high level athletes, and had a blast, and some great stories and memories of his week.

Calgary proudly showed the world that this city was world class, and that Canada could put on well organized, profitable, proper party. Unforgettable.

Not all public schools closed during the Games (I don't recall any doing so, but they may have). I had to go to school every day. The only accommodation they made was, as you said, allowing kids to miss class to attend events. I remember them announcing whenever an event was postponed and any kids who had tickets to the event groaning because they wouldn't get to leave early.

Sweet. The torch is lit. Last time I remember it lit was on the '04 playoffs.

Thanks for the heads up. The torch is clearly visible from up here in Arbour Lake.

I've uploaded some of my pictures from the Finland vs. Soviet Union hockey game and the medal ceremonies (including Vyacheslav Fetisov receiving the gold medal): link

My only memory is holding one of those torch candle things, a really flimsy candle in some kind of ultra-cheap translucent red plastic cup (can anybody get a picture of one of these things?), wearing my red and white Petro-Canada Olympics jacket...

The kicker was that this single moment of memory, barely lasting 5 seconds all took place inside some brown-tiled corporate washroom of some downtown Calgary office building and I wasn't tall enough to reach the paper towel dispenser.

No. Applied but didn't get the chance. Spent most of my nights during the Olympics playing trombone in the medal parades that went down Stephen Ave to the Olympic Plaza. After that I just sort of drove around with friends looking for Olympic parties to go to around town (mostly unsuccessful). The only brush with fame was my mom telling me she met this nice Italian skier when she was out with friends (turns out she later found out that it was La Bomba). Scary that the Olympics marks the year I graduated from high school. Yeesh, time flies but I can say that I no longer desire a Sun Ice jacket.

All in all it was really good fun - events I attended included the downhill skate at Nakiska, ski jump (featuring Eddie the Eagle), Swiss vs Canada hockey game and the bobsled. Short track speed skating and aerials were exhibition sports that year, and I did get a chance to catch the aerials. Would have liked to see short track - from what I heard it never looked closer to roller derby than 1988 .

I was 10 years old in Moncton and stricken with Chicken Pox. I got to stay home from school, and I watched as much coverage of it as I could. Since 88, Calgary has been calling me to be here, and I finally made the move in 99.

I'm pretty sure they gave them to us kids at school...? Must have also given them away at the opening/closing ceremonies.

Did anyone catch TSN's hour long Olympic show last night? I forget the exact title, but it was something like "The Olympics...from Calgary to Vancouver". I was worried it may be hokey, but it was very, very, very well done. I loved every minute of it.

I thought it was very cool to see Brian Boitano and Brian Orser being overcome with emotion simply by stepping out onto the Saddledome ice. That's awesome our rink carries such powerful memories for huge Olympic stars of the past.
