I'd be down for playing some shinny if it's at Silver Springs. I've just been getting onto my skates this year... took a long ass time for ice to start coming up.
I'm one of the older teenagers who sucks at hockey and thus never gets passed to. But most of you guys sound like you'd be fun to play with.

If I'm feeling it, I'm going to put the effort in, even if it is just outdoor shinny. Sorry if you don't like someone skating circles around you.

Maybe you should take your 'skill' to a real league and play against opponents who aren't 12 year olds.

Maybe you should take your 'bitterness' and go ahead and read what I posted; I play later at night (head up to the rink at 9, 9:30) when all of "those darn kids" are playing and it's fairly up-tempo.
It has occurred to me that those of you "bashing", if you will, those of a certain skill set are claiming hate of their competition; writing off you getting skated around as "you're there to have fun, not to compete", are also saying "if I had the mind to I'd beat the piss outta him...". How competitive of you!

Ch40s- keep in mind what this thread is about- pickup hockey. If you play in some sort of competative league- fine. We are discussing what happens when people of different skill levels come together in the one thing that all of us on this board have in common; the love of the game.

It's a pickup game, not some serious league. Go ahead and showboat or hotdog, chances are you won't be invited to any further pickup games.

Last winter, a bunch of us were playing shinny and having a blast, passing to the weaker players, making fun plays and all that. Then these two younger guys (probably 17 ro 18) showed up with one of those stupid team suits (you know the ones, they have the jacket with the matching sweat pants with the name of the team written on the but, like girls pants) and they immediatly started dangling around everyone end to end, and laughing cockily to eachother everytime they scored. The thing was though, we had two or three guys that COULD play that well, if they wanted to. So one of our buddies completely embarssed both of these clowns in one end to end rush, and then he yelled out "see we can do that too, but were not, because the scouts already went home" I lol'd.

The only reason you're going by anyone is because we have the courtesy to let you go by.
Also, we don't justify it by not taking a guy out, but hey.. if you think you're going to skate THROUGH me, enjoy a taste of the ice my friend.. It's you or me. But like I said 99% of the time i'll just let you go because who cares? I don't recall Mike Keenan calling me out. LOL
Otherwise, find an open teammate and pass the fricken puck.

Yes.. I'm talking about going up to the outdoor rink to play with some friends and a bunch of people I don't know.

Which brings me back to the original point, where SarichFan said people who go end to end look like tools. Why? I don't want to go and play pick-up half-assed. I want to go and make some nice plays and passes and have some fun. And again I reiterate... I'm not going all out and hogging the puck and laughing at little kids when I go around them.
Playing outdoor hockey is a chance to get some icetime and have some fun (for free!). I know there's people of different skill levels and I recognize that.. I spread the puck around and make sure the other team has a chance to have some fun as well (ie holding back on a play).
Obviously I was taken way out of context because I said I go there for my enjoyment. I just don't feel the need to cater to the every need of some random at a lesser skilllevel then the rest of the group so they can have the most fun.. hence why if I have a chance to go end to end I'll do it. ( Again, if there's a younger guy there who is at a lesser skill level than the other guys but it isn't dangerous or absurb for him to be playing on the "big boy rink", then I'll occasionally 'accidently' lose the puck to him, but it won't be something I'm doing every time I get the puck and go against him).

This post reeks of bitterness.
I feel I've clarified myself to death on my original comment.
To say "you have the courtesy" to let me by is egotistical, hypocritical, and a joke. You have never seen me play, and I have never seen you play. You honestly think everytime one of the AAA kids blows by someone that they're (the defender) just being courteous? Uh-huh.
If there ever was a problem at the outdoor rinks, it's a person like you. You're trying to antagonize the puck hogs by saying "I'm not trying, you look stupid because you are". If ever a fight breaks out at one of these pick-up games, it's because someone like you feels the need to try and save face by hitting someone or accidently tripping them.

I don't think you get it, you don't have to step off the gas.. I'm just speaking for myself I guess, to me, the game is more fun if everyone is involved. Yes it's a little frustrating that not everyone understands the structure of a game, but still.. It's just inconsiderate otherwise.
If there's one or two buddies who think they're so awesome that all they do is pass to each other, or just take turns going end to end, that is BS. Book some ice time with your buddies if you want to have a competition.
Because yes, you do look like a total jackass if you do it regularly.

Sure thing... Do you know how easy it'd be to sit you down on a one on one rush? All you have to be is in position, which is how I play. I could do 1 of two things here:
1) Let you go by
2) Knock you on your ass, because you simply won't go by me
I always go for #1 because again, there's no score being kept.. there's no scouts in the stands... and it's OUTDOOR SHINNY
I'm egotistical because I just want everyone there to have fun, but you've said clearly that you're there for you, and not everyone else.. you don't want to pass to someone with less skill than you, and i'm an ego maniac??? you slay me.. Man your Signature speaks the truth. You're something else man.

It's obvious that you're immersed in your own little ignorant world, as you didn't even address (and I assume didn't read) my main points. You're getting defensive at the thought of someone dangling you (I'm not talking about me here, perhaps some random AAA player) and counter with "yea well if I was trying I'd nail him!". Oh but you have to save face and say "well it's only outdoor shinny".
I could be president if I wanted to, I'm just being courteous to the others that want to!
Edit for your edit:

You're idea for having fun, initially, was to not try at all. That isn't fun for me. I've clarified my point about going there for my enjoyment. I'm not going to coast around because there are a few lesser-skilled players.
You're meeting ego with ego by saying you could hit them (the puck hogs) if you want, and you're letting them go around you because you're courteous. It's complete bull.

this is the guy that i love to play with. you can really help someone have a lot of fun and appreciate the game and the sheer joy of playing.
no disrespect ch40, but i would rather play with a team of OOTCs against a team of players who can really make it happen...no offense OOTC. The reason is that i get a lot more enjoyment from shinny when people who would otherwise never get the chance to play...get a chance to play! and they go out knowing that they might not get the chance to shine.
so i love to see them shine. its awesome!

4) Have about 6 beers before you get to the game, it doesn't hurt to feel like superman, and when you pee your pants after a hit it will keep your legs warm
5) Its ok to have an edge, heavy training and steroids will give you the edge that you need

7) If there are young kids playing in the game, its a perfect time to impress your friends and any girls watching with the high light reel type of hit. Extra points are awarded if you leave your feet and follow through
8) When you score a goal, flail your arms, jump up and down, scream yahoo, and then autograph the puck with the sharpie that you tucked into your glove
9) Everytime someone breaths on you scream "Penalty", then argue the call
10) There's nothing more satisfying then throwing the perfect hip check on a senior citizen, then when he's lying on the ice writhing in pain lean over and laugh at him while you say "Got Milk"
11) there might be scouts somewhere in the same city, so just in case, take all of the pressure on you, don't pass the puck to those useless players that are just going to screw it up. Mutter to yourself "You guys are useless, I'll do it myself"
12) After the game, when you go out to have a beer, duck out on the tab, your friends will admire your fiscal conservatism.
13) Just as the play is getting intense in your end, yell out "Car" and push the net out of traffic.
14) When your talking to strangers, tell them that "I was good enough to go pro if it wasn't for this damn knee", then give him a hard look and mutter "You'd better have your head on a swivel tonight gramps"

15) Make sure everyone else is wearing a cup by spearing them in the nuts when they are not looking.
16) Kids that can't skate and fall down near the net are good for bank shots. Just ignore the wails of pain. They'll toughen up.
17) Hack, spear and punch your way to success!
18) When you trip a guy going in on a break make sure you give him that extra little push he needs to dislodge the net.

Love playing shinny hockey. Any chance a game can be set up the week of Christmas would be fun.
