Well, I'm stuck with Iowa_Flames_Fan, even though I no longer live in Iowa, and I'm not from there, don't ever want to go back.... When I joined it was during the lockout, and I never imagined that lo these many years later I'd still be flushing my life down the giant time toilet that is CP, so I didn't plan the nickname too carefully.
But actually, I don't mind. I kind of like being called "Iowa" as a nickname--kind of like we're all army buddies or something.

Iowa, I'm of the same ilk. I love the nicnames that are nicnames for our nicnames!
HD and I were talking over beers in the playoffs last year how we both got a kick out of people shortening our names to HD, and MQS and alike.

but my guess is that somewhere out there is a graduate student in Communications doing a dissertation on this very subject.

First of all it's Communication (no S, communications would be a wiring telephones, so I'm told, I had it hardwired into my head to drop the S) 
Regardless, I think I know a guy that might have done his masters thesis on it . . . might have been more on blogging, but I wouldn't be surprised if he touched on it. Now I'm curious, to Facebook I go!
