I'm so sad right now after reading this entire thread. Sorry about your loss Reg.

Someone needs to invent 70-80 year old life span dogs.

Im truly sorry to hear that Reggie, breaks my heart because I have a dog, and there is nothing like that unconditional love you get from your companion. This makes me wanna enjoy every minute with my dog that much more. Good luck buddy.

What a beautiful dog! My condolences to you.

My sincerest condelences Reg, I haven't had to put any of our canine family members to rest yet, but I had to with a cat last year. It was the same sort of peaceful environment as you just experienced. I bawled, and was so much of a wreck, I couldn't get myself to work, and I typically am not a cat person, it was my kids and wife who had to have the damn furball. I can't imagine how I will be when the time comes for one of my German Shepherds.

I also have the utmost respect for the fact you let your friend pass with dignity. Far too often I have seen people put the decision off for so long because they admittedly didn't have the courage. Watching an animal suffer for the sake of a selfish master is infuriating.

Real friendships like this are truly treasures. There is no unconditional love like what dogs can bring, and it is obvious that went both ways for the two of you.

I'm also sorry for your loss. In the spring, our cat was suffering from kidney failure brought on by a big stone in his pipes. We went through so many ups and downs with his treatments and surgery that I can truly imagine how hard it must have been for you to hear the diagnosis from the vet.

At least I think you know it was the right thing to do.

Sorry to hear Reggie. It sounds like he was never taken for granted, something that I feel is all too common among household pets. Tough day forsure. Condolences

A touch light hearted given the subject....but I think thats the first time I've ever seen a retreiver without a stick or ball in his mouth.

Every time I've walked by one of my dogs in the house I've taken an extra minute to give them an extra pat, or bit of attention. You never know when the day will come that they're not around to give them that extra pat on the head.

He'll enjoy his final swim in the River.

That just remined me of that Arnold Movie "The Sixth Day" where they had a place called 'Re-Pet' where when a family pet died it would be cloned and their genetics removed of mutations that cause disease.

Sorry about your loss Reg. This tread has been a difficult read.

Sorry to hear this, Reg. Before reading this thread I had given one of our dogs a tongue-lashing for peeing on the floor. Time to go give them a belly rub and apologize.

Wow, that sounds nice. There was none of that when we put my cat down in July. She went to sleep on our blanket on top of the metal vet's table with the bright fluorescent lights. After she gave up the ghost my brother unceremoniously pulled the blanket out from under her head so that her head went *thunk* against the metal tabletop... I don't know if I will ever forgive him for that, and in fact, now, it makes me angry just thinking about it.

Oh God. I'm so sorry, Reggie.

I'd be more eloquent, but I can't 'cause it hurts.
I'm so sorry.

I'm feeling a lot better now. You can only mope about for so long.

I was intitially reluctant to share this, but then I thought of the many pet threads in the past and how many animal lovers there are here, so I did.

Love that picture of your dog, Reg!

Glad to hear that things went as well as can be expected. Spreading his ashes in the Bow is a nice and fitting ending.

He may be gone but his memories will live on forever.

I actually had to stop reading the thread. It was making me tear up. We need a LOLcats type of thread for dogs.
