Plus it isn't my computer (the families) so I will need my own soon anyways.
There are a couple things I like about the Mac. More stable than a PC, for the specs it seems like a better value than a PC ( this one), the new one looks great, no junk software included. Plus on the surface it is more simple than a PC. The only downside I see is the ability to run games. I haven't been playing much in the way of computer games recently and since it is possible to run windows on the mac I can still run all my games (or use my xbox). Plus I just want to try something different. My other choice is to build my own PC, but I have a feeling I would end up spending much more than this Mac will cost.

Just so you realize, you are linking to the US site. The CDN store is $100 more (which is finally a reasonable difference), unless you get an education discount.

I've got an XPS1210 that runs beautifully, and is just over a year old now.
For me to switch to Vista: $299.99 - $499.99 (probably $299.99)
For me to use ubuntu: Free
For me to switch to OS X: $1,614.00 (at minimum, not including taxes, and this system doesn't match my current)
Per ubuntu:
In my latest ubuntu update I found that my nVidia drivers finally got fixed! If I was using those drivers then my computer would lock up if I tried suspend or hibernate. But it's so worth it for Beryl!
I wish I could get Office 2007 on ubuntu, after that I wouldn't really need anything from Windows at home.

?
You just compared the price of getting a new OS to the price of getting a new computer...
Seems a bit flawed, no?

And to say it doesn't match your current system isn't a pure numbers game. Windows PC's use hardware different than Macs. I can promise you 2 computers with the same hardware will load OS X a heck of a lot faster than Vista.

Not when, because of Apple's policies, he would need to buy a new computer to use OSX.
That was his point.

True, but it's still like saying that buying a new car is more expensive than doing repairs to your current vehicle...and justifying not getting a new car that way. Eventually you buy a new computer/car....

Building a PC yourself is ridiculously cheap. Check out sites like Newegg.com (which the exchange rate as good as it is right now, you're actually saving money buying from American sites) or look at Memory Xpress's website and you can probably put a top end computer together for ~$800 - $900 bucks. The most expensive part will be the OS, but if you're lucky - you might find an unused copy of XP out there for a reasonable price. Unless you fancy yourself into getting Vista.

In exact words, I just told them that my "magsafe melted". They redirected me to someone in the safety department, answered some questions about my safety, then he arranged to ship me a new one.
I hear that sometimes they'll ask you to take it to the closest Apple Store. Just tell them that there's no Apple Store near you and that should be all it takes.

There was a class action lawsuit launched in the US today about the Mag safe adapters. They will listen to you. They have also been quietly redesigned as well.
Call them up me dennis.
I have been unpluging my macbook from the wall when I'm out. Better safe than sorry. I unplug all wall chargers though for what it's worth.

they've already been around 30 including a period where things didn't look so good, i think 5-10 when they're gaining momentum should be pretty easy...

Hmm...I must have posted the wrong link, but yeah I was hopefully going to use an education discount. Which is $100 less and a free iPod.

Really? I didn't think it would be that cheap. I though building a top end computer on my own would be around the $1500-$2000 plus a monitor. I most likely wouldn't go Vista either.

My point was explained above.
In terms of hardware, my current laptop has higher end elements than anything in the MacBook I looked at.
It's the OS and the associated software that Mac attacks Windows on, so why can't I use it? My current computer could more than easily run OS X, but I can't just go out and get OS X. I have to go out and get a new laptop.

The thing to remember is that Windows is actually a very stable OS, it's the third party software tools that often crash or hang your computer, not Windows.
I suspect as Mac's become more popular and more people start writing third party software for it, you'll see more problems with the OS.

How is open office when compared to Office? Is it compatible with Office 07 yet?

So in building my own computer and installing the regular store bought Windows I would, in theory, avoid the third party programs (like Dell installs) and have a smooth running PC?

You could probably get your current XPS, format it, fresh install and keep the Dell crap off of it and it would run like a dream.
I recently re-formatted to get my dual boot setup properly and I haven't been installing everything under the sun on it and it's been really nice.

It does a decent job comparing to Office 2000 maybe, but Office 2007 is lights out the best.
