Be careful who you trust in life, or better yet, trust no one ... your best friend or your brother is as likely to screw you over as anybody else if there's personal gain in it for them.

Always expect the unexpected is my motto.
I've witnessed first hand what can happen to friends when it comes to winning a prize. Back in the early 90's i was working for Safeway and 2 guys in the produce dept went halves on a 20 strip of tickets for the Stampede Dream Home. Each got 10 of the tickets and put their John Henry and info on the tickets. One of the guys did win the Dream Home and the other friend tried to sue saying he was entitled to the home also as they shared in the cost of the tickets. The guy that sued lost the court battle and had to pay the other friends court costs. Needless to say the friendship was over.

Just because I've been royally screwed doesn't mean I'm out to get mine by screwing others. On the contrary it has given me a greater appreciation for honesty and I try to be honest in my dealings with others. I even corrected a car dealer once when he was screwing himself out of $2000 in the paperwork on a used car deal with me. I'm sure there's someone on the planet who feels I've done them dirt, but I wouldn't have done it intentionally.
As for whether you should trust me or not, you don't know me so of course you shouldn't. You shouldn't trust anyone you haven't known for several years, and then only with caution and if absolutely necessary ... in my experience at least.

What I'm trying to say is that if you consider yourself a trustworthy person (as most people do), then it is kind of ridiculous to take the worldview that other people shouldn't be trusted. That said, I'm sorry if you have had bad experiences with people close to you.
Not trusting people you don't know is good advice. Not trusting family and friends is horrible advice, even if it saves you from getting scammed I can't help but feel that it is impossible to form good relationships without trust. It seems like a risk worth taking.

I'm guessing you've never been royally screwed by a wife, friends or sibling? Having had some extremely bad experiences with all three has made me a lot less trusting of humanity. Bad advice? Sure, if you never get screwed. It can also be a good defense mechanism though. Whether I consider myself a trustworthy person or not really has nothing to do with it in my opinion. What I'm trying to say is no one should assume I'm trustworthy without really good reasons to do so. Trust is something that needs to be earned, not freely given, in my opinion. You're less apt to get burned operating from that basis.
You're right that good relationships need trust to work. My second marriage is based on trust and is an exceptional marriage ... and has been for 20 years now. And I have a few friends who I would trust with my life, because they've earned that trust over time. But nobody automatically has my trust just because they're a friend or family member. Automatically trusting someone is just asking to be used and abused.
I'm not sure why I'm aguing this out though. If you find trusting everyone works for you, go ahead. Do it. You're a better person than I am.

When at a pub or restaurant with friends, either 1) pay as you go, or 2) get separate bills. Not only does it avoid the mass confusion of who owes what, plus tip, etc etc, but it avoids you getting screwed as well.
(case in point - when I was out with some people, stayed until the end, and paid $40 for my one beer, 1/5th nachos, and a coke)

See that cd or dvd burner in your computer?
Use it regularly to back up any kind of data that is irretrievable and properly label and file the finished cd or dvd.
Failing to back-up your data is a really stupid thing to do.

frig if you're ordering blow at the bar, I'd think $40 plus a beer and nachos you're getting off easy!

When booking a room over the phone at a hotel, be nice. Depending on the hotel, the phone agent has some discrestion with selecting nicer rooms than others. They can also do nothing for rude & cheap people who ask for everything for nothing. I guess that this can be applied to other things as well...

If when driving at night and your eyes tend dry out or get sore try using the windshield shade to redirect the air from your defrost that's blowing into your eyes. Also, the white line on the side of the road is called the fog line. Stare at it and follow it when driving at night rather than the head lights coming at you from the on coming traffic.
When hauling a heavy load in the mountains go down the hill in the same gear you needed to climb it or one lower. You shouldn't have to apply your foot brakes more often then once every 13 seconds. If you have an engine brake you shouldn't be needing your foot brakes at all to control descent.
