As for more people then before....well I don't think there is a change in the per capita. There is more because we have more people. There are also more being caught (and then being let back out).

These are the problems, first I dont understand why people are against it, molesters, rapists, murderers, all types of people should be up for the death penalty, I dont know why society wants to protect them.
Plus we give them like 5 years and let them back out with a warning... yea reaaaaal affective. Like that guy who kidnapped those two kids.. he's been in and out what twice now? This is not right! whos to say the next time he wont escalate to killing his victims too???
It just feels like punishment these days is more of a slap on the wrist.

I would agree that the current criminal justice system in Canada needs a MAJOR overhaul. And thank goodness the Conservatives are doing something...not enough but something.
As for the Death Penalty...it's not about protecting them. I feel that no other person has the right to take another persons life. If we started to kill them....well....we wouldn't be any better than they are IMO. I also think that is the easy way out for them. Really would you rather stay in jail for your entire life (which usually doesn't happen at the present) or take the easy way out and be killed?

Either:
a) to reform the criminal into a functioning member of society; or
b) to remove them from society because they are a threat to the social well being
I don't believe the father would really fall into either category. Wouldn't another form of punishment be more fitting? Fine? Community Service? I dunno, just something to debate and talk about really.

I'm not sure about the official objectives behind the legal system, but I would guess you can add
c)punishments
d)setting standards and common law for others to act by
Letting the father off too easy would not address either of these and would set a dangerous precedent for talking the law into your own hands.

True, I guess I'm just a believer in "an eye for an eye". Plus I guess I really dont know what prison is like... if it was hell, more than a country club with bars, then alright. I just have no tolerance for people who commit dispicable crimes and would want them to pay... Its sounds bad but if you took an approach of shall we say "feed em to the wolves" and give them a taste of the fear and torture that they put their victims through. I've been called a dictator for having this opinion but commiting somthing horrible needs an equal or greater punishment. IMO

People are usually against it for 2 reasons:
1)If mistakes are made, innocent people may be killed. (and this does happen where capital punishment is used)
2) There's no evidence that capital punishment will decrease crime. Infact, it has shown to do the opposite.

Who's to say anyone won't kill? Are you suggesting that we punish him for murders he hasn't commited?
maybe his punishment for kidnapping should be harsher, but it still has to fit the crime. Not a hypothetical future crime that he hasn't commited.
And punishment for murder is not 5 years. Not sure where you're getting that from?

I am against the death penalty, but you must agree that a CM that get's one will never do that again, no?

I know he didn't kill anybody, his original sentence was for pedofilia or somthing. Either way he was in and out twice I believe, a repeat offender and the second offence was worse. For these he only recieved like 8 years or somthing... I'm just saying that more precautions should be taken before he escalates to the point of killing. The fact hes a repeat offender doesn't give alot of hope to him getting better, and the punishment he recieved didn't seem to fit.
