I am pretty sure the Motorola a840 is unlocked. So you do have the ability to use it like a GSM phone overseas with any provider or with TELUS.

Also
You can use any unlocked GSM phone with a TELUS sim card and roam-with your TELUS number- in any GSM country other than Canada and the USA.

I think Fido/Rogers is the way to go. A lot of freedom phone wise as well.
