Maybe because in the late 70's and early 80's the underground trains in places like New York, Paris, London, etc. seemed to be the dirty places of those cities, but if we could have ours above ground like in Chicago it would come across as being classier.

Tell me the discisions about asthetics that you made in the 80's are one you are proud of today.

Really, what the Simpsons taught us- was that the monorail couldn't work.

Its just not viable.

Sydney, Australia built a monorail for the 2000 Olympics and today is a massive ununsed white elephant. As is the train which runs from the airport to downtown....

It took 25 posts to turn this into an Edmonton-bashing thing. You guys are slipping. BTW, you can have the one mill. Problems are created when cities grow too rapidly.

You're not kidding. It doesn't stop with the traffic though, it goes much, much further than that.

Thats exactly what's happened in Kelowna too. Went from like 50k to 150k in less than 20 years. Now they're eons behind in terms of infastructure. But they have great health care there from what I hear.

Having not lived in Calgary for over 12 years now, I'm both proud and worried to see the City grow to 1 million people. Even though its just a statistic, its a symbolic achievement that shows the city has really reached the big-time ... the 1 million mark is often used to distinguish between the major cities and the medium sized cities .. the men from the boys so to speak.

Its good because it shows Calgary is a cosmopolitan metropolis that has all the benefits and respect that a large city deserves. It can be problematic because with it comes big city problems, such as traffic, increased crime, etc. Traffic can be a particular problem for Calgary because of the way its built; very widespread, low density development. That means people traditionally live further away from downtown and there's more ground to cover.

From the looks of it though, the C-train expansion - as long term as it may be - is a good idea. Investing in public transportation is much better than building and expanding new roads at alleviating traffic. It also will encourage, as Josh White mentioned, higher density devepment around the stations.
