Good call... I'm pretty much flushing my history class down the toilet because of the game

If you turn the texture quality down from high to medium it really bumps up the frame rates (but of course it doesn't look quite as good).
I played around with the sliders and removed a few shadows (self shadows and grass shadows) and am pretty happy with the performance now.

I finally got it up and running. I have come to conclusion that I need a better video card.
Way better then Morrowind. You don't have to run around everywhere getting lost, you can just click on the map and go there, plus you get a horse.
The quests are more entertaining and the start of the game is more linear. When I first played Morrowind I got overwhelmed with all the places to go and explore so early in the game.
Oblivion lets you get use to everything in the game before it really lets you loose to explore everywhere. The fighting in more adventure packed and the graphics are amazing! I couldnt stop playing yesterday for 6 hours straight.

I highly recommend the Dark BrotherHood Quests.
Absolutely great quests in there, great rewards as well.

I just "joined" aswell or did the dirty task to join. This game is just insane. I've put in 33 hours since it was released. It would've been more if I didn't have to wait 2 days for my video card to be shipped. But man, it's a beauty with it.
Yeah Draug, your PC would work very well with a better video card. the 6600GT isn't even that bad, just not enough for this game (I had a 6600GT) until I got my 7900GT.

Anyone have any opinions on the level scaling issue? I know there are some people annoyed beyond belief about this. Hasn't been an issue for me yet but I'm still a relatively low level character. (Need....to....play...it....more)
However, the arguement I've been hearing is that what's the point in levelling up at all if you are not getting stronger than the enemies that you'll be facing? What do you think?

I dunno... I like that the game maintains a constant level of "difficulty" Makes the emphasis on andventuring then just hacking through like Diablo would.
The items get better with level though, and the enemies are stronger because of it.
I love the Oblivion gates, especially when you come upon one unexpectedly. Give me chills!

Just had to quit my 1st character.. made some errors during creation, and got to level 18 so fast, (12 of the lvls purely in the arena) that my character was totally gimped. He was fantastic at single 2 on 1, 3 on 1 fights of any variety... but I found when dungeon crawling and the like he simply didn't have the staying power, and had to rely heavily on potions and the like to get through. I'd planned on surviving with heavy enchantments.. but seeing how impossible it is to do that with a nearly "pure" fighter. Had to abandon him...
I strongly suggest reading some character guides and such before simply plunging in. I'm an RPG veteran, and I still made mistakes that made my character simply unsuitable for much of the gameplay.

I love the level scaling. It prevents a person from just slashing through the game. I hacked and slashed through the first Diablo in a weekend, and that is the reason I never bothered playing Diablo 2. Oblivion should take a huge amount of hours to complete, and that is great.
As Jordan pointed out, the point in levelling up is to get better monster with more loot. The more loot you have, and the more extrodinary weapons you have, the better you'll do.
The key to the level scaling is to stay ahead of the level curve. If you advance your character correctly, you should be able to maintain the same balance that you have at level 1 through the rest of the game because you are getting better slightly ahead of the monsters.
But, that is easier said than done. I had to start over too, just as SouloftheFlame did, because I levelled up very poorly. It wasnt that I levelled up too fast; I used the wrong skills to gain level points. The skills I became good at were not the ones I needed (or planned) to use when fighting monsters later in the game.
Here is a decent guide to the character creation and the training of them:

Yeah... I knew when I bought the machine that the graphics card was about a year behind where I would have liked. I chose to save the money at that time.
I have turned off enough stuff that the game runs great now, but you miss out on so much visual stuff.
I am really, really, really, tempted to buy a better card. But where does the madness end? Im going snowmobiling this weekend, and that will cost more than the video card....
I agree with you that the game is awesome. Everything is good - the quests, the AI, the music, and of course the graphics (the only thing I dont like is the small window they give you to look at your maps - let me zoom that out!).
Its visually the best game I have played on PC. Since that is the best feature of this game, I better get the video card eh?

I did last night actually:

But yeah your video card is going to be the limiting factor. But hopefully that should help some.
And as Calgary Flames said a 7900GT is a smoking card for the price if you want to upgrade. Though not sure if you have PCIe or AGP.

Damn I love this game! I've got about 35 hours in and have only done like 2 parts of the main quest. It's so easy to get side tracked. Especially when you're on your horse going down a path and you see one of these in the distance. Instant 2 hours gone because you want to go through it and close the portal.

Just finished the Dark Brotherhood quests, it was awsome.
You get plenty of magic items, as well as one bitchin horse.

Bought a new video card today to play this game on. The frame rate just wasn't cutting it for me. Didn't want to spend the $$$ for the 7900 much as I was tempted. Had to settle for the 7600GT but it still should be a nice upgrade on my 6200. Here's hoping anyway. Haven't installed it yet.
Thanks for the responses on level scaling. Like I said it's not an issue for me at all but some people sure get bent out of shape about it on the forums. If anything I just think it keeps the game challenging and interesting. What a fantastic game this is. Best I've played in a long time.

Anyone been annihilated by a will-o-wisp yet? My character just can't seem to handle them. I can deal with everything that gets sent my way but not these things for some reason. And certainly not with a spriggon, black bear and ogre also breathing down my neck.
Any tips?
Along the same lines...has anyone done the quest for the Bruma Countess? I started it just after leveling up and by the time I finished it I had two consecutive level ups again. Also some nice trinkets along the way...some good armor, two 1500+ gold piece rings, an axe that does 10 damage that also damages magicka and a 2300 gold piece ring as reward. Well worth the frustrations of the damn will-o-wisps.
