Problem is St Louis likely asking for Dickinson if they thought they were getting Mrtka and 1st from Buffalo.
The better of the two 1st round picks (Sharks or Oilers) is the start but I don't think San Jose will want to part with any of their top prospects.

Maybe, that trade cant happen though so its irrelevant. Buffalo almost certainly has to take a worse offer or keep him.

If I'm looking for a defenseman, I'm looking at the probable price difference between Parayko and Whitecloud, and I'm picking Whitecloud all day.
Parayko (32) $6.5M for 4 more years after this one. Costs 2 ultra-premium assets
Whitecloud (29) $2.75M for one more year. Probably costs 1 premium asset (late 1st)
Easiest decision ever.

Cagnoni and Havelid along with the better of the two firsts would probably be about the same value that Buffalo offered. Better pick, and splitting the difference in prospects between to very good ones instead of one better one.
Anaheim and LA can't touch the back end prospect depth of SJ. Could probably swap in Wallenius or Wang dependent on preference.

I guess Buffalo is more like Detroit and St. Louis more like Chicago?

St Louis has some really bad neighborhood
But of course when you are rich, you never go there

Relative to the bombed out hellhole I remember it being in the 90s, Detroit is going through a bit of a renaissance these days. Definitely still on the grittier side, but I actually quite liked it the last time I was there. Like most American cities, there are are some terrible parts, and some parts that would make Mount Royal look quaint. Detroit has plenty of fancy suburbs (Gross Pointe etc) where I'm sure your average millionaire hockey player could be quite happy.

Every major American city is pretty gross. But they all also have super-awesome areas where rich people live, work and play. That's the whole deal with the U.S.
Remember when fans here were wondering why any NHLer would want to play in Vegas? Turned out the area NHLers live and raise families in is awesome. Same with St Louis -guys who play there love it. Many stay after they retire (Pronger, MacInnis, Tkachuk, Hull, Brodeur).
I'm sure Buffalo offers great communities for rich people too. The downsides to the Sabres are: weather, ownership, losing. Even if they've overcome that last handicap, the other two remain.

Yeah - I mean Buffalo isn't great - but he's not being traded from Miami or LA.

I definitely felt a sense of poverty, that you do not see in a Canadian city, while visiting St. Louis. I guess like a lot of "post" segregation US cities, you can shield yourself from that by living in a rich area.
I definitely really like the social, music and sports scenes in St. Louis. I'm presuming Buffalo doesn't have those. I'll probably never visit Buffalo to be fair.
