Kerins was still 11th in AHL scoring last year, one of the top players in preseason, and he can't seem to crack the lineup.
PS: Fun fact, Kerins now leads the Wranglers in all-time points with 100, Hunt in comparison just got his 250th AHL point.

Well Hunts PPG was slightly above Kerins last year he just played less games

Rory Kerins is the new Matthew Phillips: an obvious, sure-fire, can't miss NHLer, according to fans who will take anything as grounds to run down the Flames' management. He will continue in that role until some other undersized but flashy AHLer takes it over.

I hate this exaggeration, nobody is saying that Kerins is an obvious, sure-fire, can't miss NHLer. People just want to see them get a look.
We'd rather have more ice time for the U-24 forwards that were drafted and developed by the organization than the 29-30 year old forwards that have already established themselves as NHL journeymen / AHL veterans.
Guys like Hunt and Kirkland should outproduce guys like Kerins and Stromgren in the AHL, they are 29 year old career AHLers.
We know what guys like Kirkland and Hunt are at the NHL level. They are inconsequential but safe.
Take a chance and maybe call up a younger guy that might have more upside, but comes with a little more risk.
And the frustrating part comes when the team can't score. When people were clamouring for Phillips to get called up it was because the Flames couldn't score, and had a hole at RW, but they couldn't call up the guy who was 1.3 PPG in the AHL around that time.
And even this season...the Flames have 9 goals in their last 7 games...we have a young player that's been a good scorer in the AHL, that generated offense in the NHL in his limited time even if it came with some defensive flaws, but nope don't give that guy a look just keep doing the same thing.
Will they become NHL stars? Probably not. Will they even become NHL regulars? That's unlikely. But why not just try something a little different.

Yeah, showcase some of these tweener players so that we can get a look at them.
The extreme polarity here sometimes is crazy. No one is saying they are sure fire NHLers. We just want to see them play some NHL games for the team that drafted them. Some of these guys we’ve been following for ages.

Yeah, at this point you pretty much know what Dryden Hunt. Why not call up someone else like a Morton or Stromgren and see if they can at least handle NHL pace?
It's not a franchise-altering decision but it's a poor one imo.

I think Hunt is just the safety net if Kadri can't go and players move up the lineup. Really he's just an extra body for this trip to Winnipeg. He'll probably sit and then be sent down tomorrow.

It doesn't have to be accurate, it depicts the state of discussion on the board where emotional stances take over logic and facts.

Because you aren't going to see whoever gets called up in an actual game.

Threads like this one remind me of the good old days on CP where we would have pages and pages of discussion/ranting when the Flames would put some 4th liner on waivers.
Feels good man.

I'm not as big on Kerins as some (most?), but I can't argue that they should see what they have before they need to expose him to waivers again.
Especially in a lost season.
But it's also been 8 games, and I'm sure that's the plan from the team already.

For Kerins, I guess the clue was when Huska said he needs to play top 9.
We already had locked in centers for the top 3 lines.

I don’t really have a quick answer but the Flames problem is the top 9. So when you hear that there isn’t room on the top 9, it is kind of a hope killer. If the Flames really do switch to rebuild mode here at some point, it’s going to have to come with a some different looks to the lineup. And that may involve extended demotions or press box time to guys with some new and/or big contracts.

I know people will always argue against this but I am very adamant that at some point for a player to continue development they need at least a taste of NHL time and experience.
In order to take that next step to become an NHLer you need to learn that in the NHL. At some point your development does stall if a player doesn't get a taste of NHL action to take back and work on in the AHL.
I don't think guys like Stromgren or Kerins can learn how to be an NHLer by playing more in the AHL after already playing 120+ AHL games and 3 seasons, at some point they need more NHL leash, even if that's on a 4th line.
Guys like Gridin, Basha, Suniev, King, Morin, etc sure they need AHL time this season.
But guys like Kerins, Stromgren, Kuznetsov aren't 19/20 years old. They are 22-23 and it's time for them to be on the roster even if it means the press box every once in a while.
|
I get all this but we are just over 10% into the season. There’s still 70+ games.
And any NHL experience if these young guys has to be backed up with a proper structure and veteran mentorship or you’re just throwing them to the wolves and doing more harm then good for their confidence and development.
Again 10% into the season and everyone is just trying still to get into the regular season groove. Fans may have given up by now but that doesn’t mean abandoning NHL or AHL strategy just yet to suddenly bring guys up randomly to see how they do.

With all the noise around trading Kadri, it looks like there might be an opening for a top-9 centre soon enough. That's when we'll see if Kerins can take a roster spot. The fact that Hunt got a few thousand extra dollars to munch popcorn for a night on the road is not particularly relevant.
