He deserves 20% of cap. a max contract but I don't think he will sign that.
8 years x $21M = $168Mish.

The salary cap went up 7.5 million bucks this off season, next years is jumping another 8.5, just that two year jump already covers this new contract. Kaprivov was already making nine million so teams have alot of new room to play with.
Pay talent, you need top players to win. Find the bargains down your line up. Not at the top end. Paying two million more to Kapriov than you wanted is alot better than UFA hunting for some grizzled vet you're going to buy out in a year.

Some Oilers media are talking about McDavid signing for $15.5M in Edmonton.

This is such a terrible contract. It really handcuffs the team and what they can build around him for years to come. They're destined to be top heavy unless they draft out of this world.

The question becomes you don't want to pay Kaprizov $17M. How do you replace him?
The answer is pretty simple. You don't. The smart play is to pay the player.

They have been more competitive than the Flames despite $14.7 million in dead money the past few seasons so when you factor in the increases in the salary cap, even with this contract they have more money available than they did since buying out Suter and Parise. I think the reality of the NHL is that most contenders are going to be top heavy. Better to be top heavy with elite players than to not be top heavy and have no elite players.

True but everyone will be making more money too...he will need to stay healthy to make this contract worthwhile. Especially with the new LTIR rules.

At the time of his signing, Parise had only 2 PPG seasons. Kaprizov has 4 straight and has 2 seasons already better than Parise's best.

Hilarious contract for shelbyville to contend with now. If this guy is worth 17, I don't know how you cantt make the argument on the free market mcdavid gets 20. They're already paying nurse 9 a year, how can they afford mcdavid and not have an ahl team around him?

It's 20% of the cap whenever the contract is signed (even if the contract doesn't start until the next season when the cap will be higher). Also, the 20% limit applies to both the annual salary (including signing bonuses) and the cap hit. This means a player couldn't sign a front-loaded maximum cap hit contract to get more money earlier in the contract.
Right now, the cap is $95.5 million, so the highest-possible cap hit for any contract signed until June 30 is $19.1 million.
Next year's cap will be $113.5 million, meaning $22.7 million will be the highest possible cap hit on any contract signed after July 1 next year.
Until June 30, he can sign an 8-year max contract with the Oilers, or whichever team holds his rights at the trade deadline. Between July 1 and September 15, he can sign a 7-year max contract with any team. After September 16, he'll only be able to sign a 6-year max contract.
