I was going more for the angle that they had to include Tereveinen with him to shed the contract.

Makes sense. They need a replacement for McAvi when he walks.

This makes no sense at all.
The team has $14M of cap space for next season and needs to re-sign Bouchard. And the priority is giving Trent Frederic $4M x 8 years.
His career high is 18 goals and 40 points...which means the $4M isn't crazy as a bit of an UFA overpayment in a world with a higher cap.
But 8 years is ridiculous.
Not like he's 24 and has upside either - he's 27.
They nickel and dime Holloway and Broberg, move Mcleod because his $2.1M was too much and they were worried about his RFA deal...but then they go and give this guy $4M.

Yah, I can see that, but I think the differences are:
- 6 years and 8 are actually a big difference
- Calle was younger (more potential growth) than this player.
That said, if someone tells me this is a savvy move because one would anticipate this player of substitute to cost them like 6 million in 2 years, then I get it. Might be my Flames goggles, but this seems like they just signed this player for market value but decided to lock him up for 8 years?

Averaged 11:24 per game in the playoffs despite many long overtimes. Clocked in under 10 in multiple games. Maybe this was the carrot they offered when they tried to get him to injure Bennett.

I like Frederic.. and I will run with the assumption that he was not 100% in the playoffs and will be better next season.
I don't like Frederic enough to lock him up to an 8 year deal.

4 x 8 or 8 x 4…doesn’t matter! Oilers 50/50 picking up the $32 million usd tab.
I can exclusively reveal the audio from the bench from game 3.
Connor to Leon: Remember that movie Trading Places? Bet you a dollar that I can get an 8 year contract for someone that isn’t me.
Connor to Trent F: Hey Trent! Bet you an 8 year contract that you can’t break your stick on Bennett!
Connor to Bowman: I know that you are great at covering things up, especially during the Stanley Cup playoffs. Listen, I want you to offer Trent an 8 year contract as a favour to me.
Bowman to Jackson: of course it’s great news! As you know, Connor often puts “his people” into important roles. Think of this as so close to a Connor extension!
Jackson to Katz: Sorry to get you off the casting couch but this is big! No bigger! Connor has started to rebuild the team in his image! This is the first domino!

I think we've seen this before. I predict he signs 8x3.3 and media will spin it somehow like it's a great deal and "hometown discount". Still would be great, for us.

Yeah that's possible.
Leak 8 x $4M, then when it's 8 x $3M people think it's a discount instead of wondering why a 27 year old bottom 6 forward got an 8 year contract.

It's almost guaranteed that he won't play the full 8 years. The only question is whether the league will make the Oilers buy the contract out or not.

This can't be real. If it is, this is about as good as them losing in the Finals.

I love it. I imagine the thought process is we have McDavid and Drai locked up long term so let’s get the team that made the cup finals in back to back years all locked in. 8 more years of cup finals.
Then when regression happens, and potentially if McDavid leaves, they have nothing but over payed depth players for numerous years.
This really good be great to watch. Decade of darkness but this time with the team at the cap but terrible, no prospects or draft picks to even have hope.

Lines sure are thin in Edmonton eh? Tobias Rieder with 11 points gets blamed for the entire season, Frederick with his 15 points gets an 8 year extension.
