Ukrainians do the same. Took a flight from Kharkiv to Egypt a while back full of Ukrainians and the moment the wheels touched down people were applauding like it was Pavarotti on stage. Every domestic flight there is the same. So strange. I guess when you have flown Ukrainian Airlines your entire life, you appreciate every good touchdown

My wife does this all the time too, as recently as last week. I always casually remind her that the most dangerous part of any flight isn't while you're in the air or during turbulence, but rather while the plane is touching down and the pilot has to control the landing. I jokingly tell her that the applause probably distracts him and puts us in even more danger.
