Huska's ability to develop and get the most out defensemen is not being discussed enough.

The guy is a 1 man defenseman factory

Either bomb or make the dance. Being just on the outside and losing the Flames pick is worst of the potential outcomes.

Personally, I have no problem with them cultivating this winning culture before they're actually good on paper. If they keep flipping FAs and expiring players for picks and end up in a wildcard spot in the meantime, they'll still continue to build a prospect base.

It's better than sucking out loud and then not being able to figure out the winning part after getting all the sexy picks (Buffalo, Detroit, Anaheim, etc)
The team can’t score.

If they can’t score and don’t make any major additions, they’ll fade into the bottom 10 after the deadline no matter how good the goaltending is.

They could finish with the worst powerplay in the league.

Does the team with the worst man advantage ever make the post-season?

That seems awfully difficult.

That's so cheesy it's good.

I feel like we would've seen signs if they were going to fade into the bottom 10.

I thought the trip through Vegas and SLC was the start of it (like every one else), but it turned out to be the outlier. Now I'm not sure I'm seeing it. There's too much fight in the group. But maybe the talent level will catch up with them around the 40-60 game mark and they'll find their way there.

Given that the PP and PK can't get much worse and they're still picking up points, it throws more doubt on the bottom 10 finish for me. Guys like Kuzmenko, Sharangovich and Kadri won't stay cold.

Should only be 1 goal against in Wolf's last 3 games; insane.

Its not like the WC or even the Pacific teams are anything special...slightly more scoring and a slightly better PP would have the Flames in a pretty good spot. Heck they already are.

2 regulation losses in 9 games, its not just the hot start now

Right now, they’re 9th in Goals against and 24th in Goals For.

If they’re going to be a bottom-10 offensive team, they’d better be comfortably in the top-10 for goals against, probably top-5, if they’re gonna make the playoffs.

Yes, the PP and PK can’t get much worse.

But they can stay this bad. Unless Kuzmenko and Sharangovich figure something out in a hurry, the powerplay is going to remain lost, because there remains no true offensive catalyst on this team.

They’ll still need to play Vladar every 4th night to showcase him until the deadline. He’s probably not giving up one goal a night.

They will sell Kuzmenko + whoever else, and those spots will be filled with AHL callups who will probably score more but won’t be experienced enough defensively to overcome veteran teams who are gearing up for playoffs.

Wolf’s gonna win them games this year they shouldn’t. Tonight, for one.

But they give up the 7th most shots per game. I don’t see them improving much in this area because it’s so hard for them to carry the play. So few of the guys on this team are comfortable with the puck on their sticks for more than a second.

Backlund, Kadri, Zary… that’s basically it. I don’t understand why nobody knows how to protect the puck or box a defender out, or why they all stop skating as soon as the puck lands on their stick.

If they can hold it together, cool. I’m not rooting for them to fail, I just don’t think a roster that drafted 9th overall last year can run it all back + Dustin Wolf and achieve a vastly different result.

I was thinking the same thing. Why waste an allstar goalie. They happen once in a blue moon.

What would those stats be equivalent to compared to a forward rookie?

30 pts in 20 games somewhere around there? At least more than a point or game.

Shootout goals should be normalized as part of a player's stat card. Yes I'm just thinking this because of Kirkland but it is an odd aspect of the shootout that it doesn't affect anyone's stats in any way

Wolf has already far surpassed even reasonable expectations of what a 1st year guy should produce. Already in the convo for hardware at seasons end.

Pretty cool to see it happening.

lol oh now teams are mediocre. When I Said the Islanders stink and are points from last place in their division you throw a tantrum.

We hung on to beat a crappy team with another 3rd period comeback. Wolf and low event hockey is keeping them in games.

It’s just crazy when Craig did everything he can to tank the season the entire NHL turns mid. Anaheim is 4 points back from us. Things can change in hurry. Anaheim could give us Vancouver and Edmonton the boot down the standings.

Seattle is in striking distance as well. Just look at the stats of the teams in that mix it’s remarkable to be in any race for any of them with the putrid special teams.

Not a lot of good teams this year especially out west.
