I think it's a pretty easy conversation with Coronato - Send him to the AHL to start the season, with the explanation that he should be on the NHL roster over Pelletier, but with his waiver eligibility the team doesn't want to risk losing him. He's the first call up. Injuries happen, trades will happen, Pelletier may lose that spot. Coronato will be in the top 9 this year, no question.

Honzek, I'd actually prefer in the AHL for his development. Call him up if there are injuries, and when we trade guys like Kuzmenko and Mantha. I still think he could use a good stint, if not a whole season in the AHL.

Just have to be patient with prospects, especially when injuries occur. For that reason I hope Pelletier figures out a higher level soon. He's good enough to be an NHLer now, just not a great one. I think he can do more. Let's hope he proves us all right.
Pelletier is 23, and while that is old relative to when many first round picks break into the NHL, it is not exactly old for a prospect. I think his trajectory is the same as Coleman's, who never broke into the NHL full time until he was 25.

Honzek has to be the best story from camp, but there's no doubt in my mind AHL is right for his development. Heck, I'd be inclined to let him cook down there all season, get him ice-time in all situations and round out his game. There is zero reason to rush 19 year old players at this stage of the rebuild.

agree. in addition Coronato can use time in the featured scoring role, first PP etc

in the end I think it's easy to get hung up on who 'breaks camp' , when in reality in a few weeks things can change quite a bit

I agree that Honzek has to be in the A, I don't think there is much of a valid debate to the contrary. Give him a few games at some point, later in the year, as a taste, but otherwise, let him grow and work on his game.

Coronato is the tough one. I don't think he has much more to learn at the AHL level, and he has probably earned a spot, but having him and Honzek playing together for the Wranglers is also very enticing. A line of:

Honzek - Morton/Lipinski - Coronato

would be fun to watch. Or maybe Schwindt.

Sounds like the Flames have made a handful of quiet cuts the last few days.
They are down to 38 players in camp: 21 forwards, 13 d-men, and 4goalies.

Still another 15 players to be sent down.

There will be injuries and trades. It won’t hurt Coronato to play 30 or so games in the AHL this season. Guys who become established as middle-six forwards typically have a season split 50/30 AHL/NHL, followed by a season of 30/50, before they stick in the NHL. Some comparables to Coronato:

Jason Zucker: 77 games in the AHL
Brandon Hagel: 67 games in the AHL (and another 14 in the Swiss elite league)

A total of around 80 AHL games over 2 seasons doesn’t hurt anyone’s development - it’s normal.

There a list anywhere of all names still at camp?

I would waive Rooney, Hunt and Schwindt

Nobody is going to claim them but if they do so what?

Give Pelletier 30 games to show what he can do, if he continues to show nothing like he does now then waive his ass. No big loss then.

It’s disappointing Hunter Brzustewicz isn’t playing in these games.

Have to say it's been an overtly positive camp for the most part, when it comes to the future of the team.

Huge comeback by Honzek.
Coronato stakes a claim.
Basha and Gridin look very good.
Brustewicz as well.
Grushnikov shows he's an NHLer.

Parekh wasn't ready, but that's fine.

On the big club Zary, Wolf, and Miromanov look the part.

Biggest (only?) issue is Pelletier.

Big contrast from previous camps. Have to give Conroy credit, not only is the makeup of the team great but the energy and overall positivity around this team.

The last year with Treliving/Sutter just felt so tense. Or camps when a Grossman arrive and take a spot for no reason.

Zero reason to rush Hunter. Let him cook in the AHL. They probably aren't seriously considering him for a spot even.

Grossman has always been a Calgary fan over reaction. He was signed for opening night so they could max out their cap situation.

It's exactly the kind of energy you want to see, period, but particularly during a rebuild. Loving the Conroy regime so far.
