It allows them to accrue cap space but really it's more that Lehner didn't report so they have to do this by the way LTIR rules are written

I can't believe the league would let Vegas get away with sketchy cap shenanigans!

I'm good with this as long as Vancouver gets a recapture penalty and the Devils get a 1st rd pick back or something.

The other benefit to Vegas is they have shed another $5M contract without penalty or having to use the same tools everyone else has to use (buy out, etc).

Is there any other sport where the CBA and contract rules mean so little? Over the last decade there’s been a stupid number of sketchy practices when it comes to contracts. It’s so bush league.
The thing is all the circumvention hijinks don’t seem to bother NHL owners and GMs. When the issue gets brought up it’s by fans and the media. It’s not an issue with the board of governors.

Vegas paid good Expansion money for these exemptions.

And the NHLPA certainly doesn’t seem to mind.

You’d just think at some point any of these groups would start to care about legitimacy but I guess not. Even the cfl wouldn’t stoop to these kinds of shenanigans and they get crapped on all the time for being Mickey Mouse.

I am all for it if Vegas uses this extra cap space to strengthen their squad so that they can take out the Oilers in the playoffs.

While increasing the # of potential buyers for Flames assets at the TDL.

Nothing to see here

This is not the first example of a player getting money not to play and it not counting against the cap

Ya Evander Kane has made 7 million every year he has been with the Oilers but has a lower cap hit than that by almost 2 million. Nobody cares if the cap is properly adhered to.

I’m late to this punch but it’s ridiculous Vegas gets every break to their advantage. Lehner should be paid if warranted but it should count toward the cap. Just a spinoff way of getting a special treatment.

Nothing is stopping the rest of the league from doing this stuff. It’s not as though the league cracks down on other cap circumvention ploys. Vegas just does it more often because they’re always in ‘anything to win this season’ mode.

The is a near 0% chance lehner would lose his LTIR money by failing to show up for a physical. The NHLPA would fight that to the end and probably win.

Even the NHL isn't stupid enough for this. It's a nice try by the knights tho
This was pretty much bang on except for the last paragraph. It turns out the NHL is stupid enough for this.
