Crosby is a very good player and role model, takes care of himself and stays well out of the spotlight off the ice, and has a squeaky clean image.

In theory, like McDavid he should be marketable for what he has done in the ice and as a captain, but from his generation forward, kids are through the hockey machine and are robots.

His outward commercials are pretty cringey, the awkward and very vanilla Tm Hortons commerical once or twice a year with MacKinnon, and he's good.

$8.7M for Crosby is a steal.

At $14M, is Draisaitl really worth $5.3M a season more that Crosby? He's obviously worth more, but I don't think he is THAT much better!

Great deal for the Pens.
I think Crosby could have gotten 12 more points playing full 2 min powerplays with McDavid

I don't think I hated Crosby so much as the constant media surrounding the most merketables players in the league.

I hated that all we ever heard about was Crosby Crosby Crosby. It's the same right now with McDingleberries. Which has the unfortunate double edge of he and Draisaitl being Oilers.

Props to Sid on being a constant in the Penguins universe like he has. The 8.7 cap hit is kind of cool looking back on it now. Best player of his generation and all he did was take his 8.7 per year.

I mean they aren't going to win but THIS is a player actually taking less money to improve his team...on a short term deal Crosby could get whatever he wanted

If he signed a $13M per deal in Edmonton all we would hear about was how he left money on on the table just to be in Edmonton.

Sid's just awesome.

In the latter half of his career he's really worked his way up my ranks of favourite non-flames players of all time.

Great role model for the kids. Too bad the media has moved on to... less illustrious characters.

Sid takes ####s with more character than McPlywood.

I seem to remember Lemieux taking discounts that somehow resulted in him being an owner at some point but maybe I'm wrong.

Sid did come into the league with a target on his back. Lockout, the big drama with the draft going to a team with some great players.

He was annoying in the beginning, but I think he worked hard to change that about himself. Less head snaps, less whining and just working hard to become great.

He didn't really take discounts. The team just had huge money issues and owed him a tonne of money at the end of his career because a lot of his salary was deferred due to lack of funds. When the Pens declared bankruptcy he was the largest creditor and proposed that instead of cash, he would accept equity and take over as the controlling owner. If he didn't do this, there was a good chance that he'd never see all the money he was owed.

They owed money to other players too because of deferred salary. Lemieux was just the biggest and the one to accept equity instead of money.

Correct. When the team was sold, he got $350,000,000 from the sale proceeds. Before taxes of course.

It ended up being a great deal for him in the long run that he leveraged $20 million into that much equity, especially considering how much the franchise increased in value. IIRC, they owed him around $35 million, and he received controlling ownership plus $15 million in cash at the time.

To his credit, he also made sure every other player that was owed money received what they were owed.

People make it sound like Lemieux was a white night swooping in to save the team, but really it was the only thing he could do to avoid possibly never getting paid.
