Lomberg
Mantha
Bean
Cooley
Conroy knows what he's doing. This was one of the best UFA days I can remember.
Exciting times.

Ridiculous or not, those players weren't coming to Calgary when they had their pick of teams.
Conroy, as far as we know, stuck to the places where he had a chance. Good for him in figuring that out, but it wasn't that hard. Calgary isn't a top destination at the best of times, but a rebuilding Calgary?

I didn’t mind Hunt last year from what I saw.

I didn't either. But he isn't a part of the future, he's simply a guy that can take a regular shift

The Flames went 7-13-0 after the trade deadline last year.
Since then, they've made a few roster changes:
Subtraction:
Andrew Mangiapane
Jacob Markstrom
Oliver Kylington
Addition:
Anthony Mantha
Jake Bean
Kevin Bahl
and on top of that, I think you can safely say that Vancouver, Edmonton, Nashville, Chicago have all considerably improved themselves.
Anaheim, Calgary, and San Jose look to be the 3 weakest teams in the West going into next season.
I'm here for it, and excited for it.

Also, SEA, NJD, MIN, OTT for sure, probably DET, and we'll see about MTL, BUF and CBJ
Bottom line: the Flames are moving down the standings, not up

PHI , CAL , ANA, SJ and CBJ are my pick for the bottom 5 this year

Draft Pick

It would be disastrous to finish in the mushy middle. We finish 12th last, give our pick to Montreal, and then go to the draft with no hope of getting a gamechanger.
Having said that, I think we're going to be bottom 5. You could make a strong case that SJ and Chicago have already passed us.

SJ was historically bad last year...they will likely remain firmly in last place.
I would also be surprised in CHI has more points than us.
I suspect CGY finishes 5th last in the league, ahead of SJ, CHI, PHI, CLB.

If you go look at Chicago's roster, it's not bad at all.
Hall - Bedard - Teravainen
Bertuzzi - Dickinson - Athanasiou
Mikheyev - Reichel - Nazar
Foligno - Donato - Philipp
Maroon, Smith
Vlasic - Jones
Martinez - Murphy
Korchinski - Brodie
Mrazek
Brossoit
I'd put that roster ahead of the Flames.

Maybe, but Hall is getting older and coming off a major injury, and with better players to play the power play, Dickinson may not repeat his season. Reichel was terrible last season, and Martinez is a shell of his former self. We all saw how bad Brodie was last season, and can Brossoit repeat on a much worse team?

Looking at and trying to piece together a lineup out of the current roster I seem to come up with the same questions.
- is Sharongovich a center now? Or will they try Zary?
- if mantha gets moved into the top line with huberdeau where does that bump kuzmenko and pospisil to?
- if lomberg has taken Duehr’s spot who is starting in the minors out of Duehr, Pelletier and Coronato
- we have too many RWers. Moving one for a true center in the works?
- who gets bumped if one of the farm D make the roster? Guessing Hanley.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
^ They brought in Mantha to play with Huberdeau. My guess is that won't be the top line.
My best (all too early) guess at lines?
Sharangovich-Kadri-Kuzmenko
Coleman-Backlund-Coronato
Huberdeau-Zary-Mantha
Lomberg-Rooney-Pospisil
- Hunt
- Pelletier
Bean-Andersson
Hanley-Weegar
Bahl-Miromanov
- Pachal
Wolf-Vladar

If they don't add another center, than likely both Sharangovich and Zary will be playing center.
Go to camp and sort it all out there. Don't count on anything and make the wingers earn their ice time.
Duehr is likely to clear waivers. You need to find out what Pelletier and Coronato can do, so if they have a good camp, keep them up.
Again, the blueliners can be sorted out in camp. Whoever plays the best gets the spots.

San Jose is adding Celebrini, Will Smith, Toffoli and Wennberg.
They have $17M in cap space with 4 D signed.
They shouldn’t be historically awful if the goaltending has a better year than last.

One can reasonably expect Bedard to get 90-100 points this year if healthy. That alone would make them a legitimate threat to finish above the Flames.

You had to squint really hard to see this team competing for a playoff spot this off-season. Unless Conroy was going to do a complete 180 and suddenly trade valuable draft currency for win now players, this is a bottom 3 roster in the league. That's fine. Actually, that's terrific.
It isn't a tank-a-thon team. It is going to be a hard-working and entertaining team that just doesn't get the wins. Just like the Bennett Draft year - they were a great team to watch. That's what I hope for. Sure, there may bet he occasional blow-out losses, but this isn't going to be a team that tanks. That's ok. They will still finish bottom 2-3. I have Chicago ahead of Calgary. They added another cornerstone piece, and they had a non-tanking roster last year before injuries and Perry sent them to oblivion.
San Jose and maybe Anaheim are the teams I have arguably below. I say arguably, because they both got better and Calgary definitely got worse.
Columbus is going to be decent, especially after that disaster of a coaching blunder behind them. Laine will be traded, and they will probably receive something that they can plug into the roster, whereas he wasn't there much last year to contribute.
Montreal is only going to improve. They have a very deep prospect pool now, and I can't see them ending up at the bottom of the standings.
Utah - their defence is greatly improved. Ottawa should be better too.
I stated this in another post somewhere, but aside from Calgary, I can't really think of any other team that has gotten worse in the last 12 months. Pittsburgh? Maybe they free-fall this year? Washington looks like a team that is just hanging on.
At any rate, at the bottom of the standings, Calgary is the only team that is worse than they were from the start of last season. Everyone else in the basement have taken varying-sized steps forward. I think Calgary ends up at least 3rd last, barring some collapse by someone ahead of them, or this team just finding ways to click and string together some wins.

Does 90-100 points move the needle for Chicago if he's -50 at the same time?

Brodie played 78 games 21:48 and was 4th on the Leafs at +17
