The UCP is a magnet for it, though.

If you do end up staying at SoHo or another hotel in the same area, there are two great restaurants within walking distance I'd recommend checking out - Chubby's Jamaican Kitchen and PAI (Thai food). If it's just you and wifey, plan for a little earlier dinner than usual so you can just walk in and maybe wait max 20 min, because getting a reservation there is otherwise very hard. For Chubby's, you can make reservations by looking it up on Google Maps. Have fun! Toronto is a fantastic city, especially in the summer!

+1 for PAI, that place is amazing. Best Thai food I've ever had. Just don't go on a weekend night, it's hard to get a seat. You can make a reso for PAI but I'd do it a few weeks in advance and prepare to have dinner either early or late as well. Lots of celebrities also visit that joint.

Thanks activeStick! Ya the plan is to stay in that area and walk everywhere. Gonna hit up Second City one of the nights as well.
Didn't think about having a tough time getting into Resturants though! Will be quite the difference from Chestermere

That sounds like an excellent plan. Downtown Toronto is an amazing walking city. I'd also recommend picking up a reloadable Presto card (slightly discounted fares) and use it take the streetcar/subway whenever you want, like if it's way too hot to be walking in the sun for 20 blocks. Another alternative to walking outside is jumping into the PATH which is an underground path that connects a lot of the downtown banks. There's shopping, washrooms and it's air conditioned. Also recommend checking it out on a Tue, Wed, Thu during lunch time just to witness the sheer number of people everywhere in the underground network. If you have any questions at all or you're looking for recommendations, don't hesitate to send me a PM.

Also wanted to point out that the Science Museum is currently closed due to structrual issues.
So if you're looking at the CityPass it may not be worth it.

Bumping to say we got back from our trip.
Bought Presto Cards for public transit. I figure what we saved on the cab ride town town paid for transit the entire trip for all of us.
Flew in and Hockey Hall of Fame on the first day
Ripleys Aquarium and CN Tower on day 2
Canada's Wonderland on Day 3
Exploring Toronto and Toronto Island day 4
Zoo day 5
Jays game day 6
Shopping and flew out day 7
Working around naps for our 2 year old cut into some time for things.
The Presto Card gives you a 15-20% discount at most attractions.
All in all a great vacation. Trying to catchup on sleep now as the 10:30pm flight was delayed an hour and I didn't pull into the driveway until 3:30am and in bed until 4:30.
My wife is already talking about going back next year.

Glad you enjoyed it! My suggestion for next year is to find a festival/event going on during the summer that you might like to take in. There's plenty to choose from. Your kids might enjoy seeing the Indy Toronto, which takes place in late July as well. Would recommend the Toronto Fringe Festival as well as Toronto Caribbean Carnival (used to be Caribana). I personally like Ossfest, which is a celebrate of Ossington street, a popular stretch of hip shops in west downtown area that celebrates its own vibe (and has great activities including pro wrestling!)

Excellent suggestions. Taste of Danforth (basically Greek festival) is also a great one, though it was cancelled this year. I'd bet it's back next year and usually happens mid-August. Later in the year is TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) which is one of my favorites in September. Massive event all across Toronto and great for people who love films as you'll get to watch world premieres!
