Uhh, if that's the non retention package, then absolutely retain.
I think Holtz + 1st need to be centerpiece of the return.
If you can squeeze Mercer, then Mercer + 2nd sounds about right.
That's exactly what I was going to say.
You either get the player you want or the pick you want. You don't get second choice for both of your needs just because there's an extra $2 million to swallow.

Interesting quote from Markstrom. Seems that he loves his teammates and they handled everything well but management didn’t. I wonder if he means that things got leaked in terms of trades but that could have been from either side. I’d be really surprised if he isn’t traded now.
The Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little, and it will fail, to the ruin of all. Yet hope remains while the Company is true. Go Flames Go!
The "keeping markstrom" release was evidently a negotiation tactic. Flames walked away, and NJ came running back.
Well played by the conman.
What if it was the other way around? New Jersey came back and low balled with no salary retention so the Flames made a statement that Markstrom was staying put for the season to cut down on the trade distraction.
I expect the centrepiece of the deal would be either Holtz or NJ’s 2024 first. Not both. Keep in mind that pick will probably be in the teens, not the 20s. The rest of the deal would be some combination of 2nd round picks / B prospects like Clarke / later picks. And Vanacek to make the cap work.
I could see something like:
To NJ
Markstrom
2024 3rd
To Cal
Holtz
Vanacek
Clarke
2024 2nd

Yeah, I feel like Markstrom is 100% gone. Whether that's now (it should be) or in the Summer, it's going to come.
I really think it should be now.
It has to be now to maximize the return. LeBrun pretty much says what a lot of us has have been saying, the Devils will have a bigger goalie market in the offseason.
Either don't do it and get a lesser return in the offseason or no trade at all, or make the deal now.

Wow I am surprised he came out in the media so hot... thats not good news. Although maybe that relationship fracture expedites a trade which I do think is in the flames best interest long term.
Will be really interesting to hear exactly what went down once it surfaces eventually. Feels like cgy went to him and asked his approval and then didn't consumate the deal
If the Flames felt they needed to gain more leverage over the Devils, good for them.
End of the day these players are being traded because they are either leaving anyways, or haven't given the Flames the team they hoped for. The only thing the Flames are obligated to do is to get the absolute best return. Boo hoo if he thinks that means they didn't 'handle' it properly.
