Hes been terrible as a Flame, and has somehow been worse this season than last season. But he''s not going anywhere. No one is taking that contract (it's the worst contract in the NHL) and it's impossible to buy it out.
Also while he wasn't the solution tonight...he wasn't necessarily the problem either. He's not the reason they allowed 6 goals as he was even on the night (1GF, 1 GA).
Andersson was a bit of a tire fire tonight IMO, on the ice for 5 goals against and didn't have a good game at all. But sure let's all blame Huberdeau.
|
Of course he was.
Someone playing the minutes and situations he does and doing absolutely nothing in the game is a problem.
Doing zero everything is a problem.

No. Huberdeau might not get us any offense, but at least he doesn't cost us defensively. Nurse is not only ineffective in the o-zone, he's also a defect in the d-zone.
Also he smells like sweatpants, wrestling tickets and Trans-Ams up on blocks on your neighbour's front lawn.

He can afford it. We gifted him a new arena.
It’s the least he can do

Wonder if the Dodgers would trade us 1 year of Ohtani for 7 years of Huberdeau. Cap works.
He doesn't even need to pitch.

WTF? No he wasn’t. He was part of what appeared to be the best package offered up in a trade. After which half of CP said “sign him long term or the trade is a failure”.

Hard to believe Huska sold Conroy on hiring him with a presentation on defensive system adjustments for this team and they look like this after 25+ games of systems adjusting.
Evidently he's having trouble motivating his players to give attention to those details since they're only playing half the game of late.
That's on the players first and foremost but also shows that Huska might be having trouble getting these guys to submit to the right way of playing.
They're alarmingly loose out there. Can be fun but hurts you in the W/L columns.

Who is this Huberdeau that y'all keep talking about? I don't believe I've ever seen him.

Team sucks. But don't get it twisted, Huberdeau doesn't stop or impact the rebuild if we decide to do it. Maybe with better players around him, he can come back.
Just sell everything for once. Please sweet baby jesus.

Not only with 5 D. Just three of them were NHL regulars, each of whom was forced to log over 25 minutes. You could tell they were tired late in the game, especially Andersson, who pushed 30 minutes of ice time and was on for 3:19 straight at the end.
After that, they had a tweener and a callup in his 5th career NHL game.
This is a recipe for all sorts of defensive gaffes, which is pretty much what we saw.

Trade Lindholm, get a late first-round pick.
Trade Hanifin, get a mid first-round pick.
Enter the draft with picks ~5, 15, and 25.
Draft Cayden Lindstrom, Carter Yakemchuk, and Tij Iginla.
Check back next week for another edition of "How to rebuild the Flames in three years"

Yeah, and he did all that on the second line. You know what the second line is? Middle six. It's also the line that doesn't play against the other teams' top defenders.
Top six guys have the ability to put up points regardless of who they play against. A top six player is someone who plays on the second line only because there isn't room for them on the top line. They can move between the first and second lines at any point in any game without missing a beat. Forsberg playing behind Sakic, Fedorov playing behind Yzerman, Malkin playing behind Crosby.
Huberdeau was never a top six guy. In fact, I remember the hype when he was drafted and a couple seasons later he was looking like a bust (very similar to Lafreniere in NY).
Middle six players are either offensively gifted, but are easily shutdown or defensively gifted and used in shutdown roles.
Huberdeau had the perfect setting in Florida. They had a massively elite player in Barkov that took a lot of defensive focus away from the second line, but they also had a some other offensive talent on the second line, in guys like Bennett, that Huberdeau could play with. Not to mention Bennett is an absolute puck hound, which meshes well with a perimeter player like Huberdeau. His two best seasons were on Bennett's wing.
The really not-awesome part about everything, is that we don't just need a Bennett (we actually have a smarter Bennett in Coleman, anyway), but we also need an ACTUAL $10M player that requires enough defensive focus that there's nothing left to put on Huberdeau.
