How could he not struggle to start, being away that long?

Then maybe Detroit shouldn't have signed him (yet, or at all) and used their cap space on an actual upgrade
Kane has shown over the last number of years that even when he's healthy, he's a net negative player.

Doesn’t he have a Calder trophy, 3 cups, a scoring title and a league MVP?

I don't if any of that is relevant to what he is now, though.

2 assists and 5 shots today, on top of another great 5v5 performance (2nd on the Wings with a 68.86% xGF% at 5v5).
Prorated contract of $2.75M.
At the very minimum you're looking at a free asset at the deadline (2nd or 3rd would be well worth the signing on its own)
Just nothing about this signing that screams bad other than a personal hatred for the player (fair play if that's the case)

"Another great 5v5 performance" is pretty rich considering he has one 5v5 point (a secondary assist) in seven games and is still under 50% xGF as a Red Wing
DET has been outscored 5-1 with him on the ice at 5v5

Kane is at 4 points in 7 games while averaging 3.5 shots per game and dealing with putrid 5v5 luck (2.27 5v5 oiSH%, .937 PDO), but overall playing great 5v5 hockey.
Blaming him for Detroit's record since he signed when they've also been dealing with things like Larkin and Perron is lol

Scorp, come on. At 5v5, Patrick Kane has the following metrics (among DET forwards):
xGF% Rel: 8.74 (4th)
SCF% Rel: 8.13 (3rd)
HDCF% Rel: 13.64% (2nd)
He's a $2.75M player more than holding his own and dealing with significant bad luck to start 5v5.

All the priors from his latter years in CHI and NYR would indicate that he's not even worth that sticker price. It's not bad luck, this is just who he is.

Why are people so desperate to defend someone who's never played a game for the Flames?

He's coming off major surgery and producing much better Relative 5v5 results than his previous years (but with currently significantly bad luck).
Using his past poor 5v5 performance when his 5v5 performance this year has been nothing other than very good with awful luck makes zero sense in this current discussion.
You're connecting poor past play with current awful luck just because you hate the player.
You're expecting the world of a $2.75M player for no reason other than to have a bar set so high that it's impossible for him to reach and thus making you correct in your assumption of him.
I don't care at all for Kane, and wouldn't be surprised at all to see his current great 5v5 metrics fall off a cliff (but even out in terms of luck), but you're grasping at straws trying to make the signing look awful from Detroit's POV when, again, even if they get an asset for him at the deadline, it's a free win.
There's not much more you could ask of Kane coming off such a surgery, at such a point in the season, learning completely new systems and coming in with no training camp

Even if, as you say, I'm overstating his flaws; you're going way too far on the other side with your breathless praise of him. He is still the same old Kane: uninterested defensively, effective in spurts on the PP, produces next to nothing at evens. Pointing to a good xGF rating against a team as terrible as the Ducks isn't particularly compelling.

Because it's way stranger to be so passionate about trying to prove how terrible he supposedly is. At 2.75M for a single year that is well worth the gamble for a young team trying to take the next step.

I'm simply arguing that he's easily worth the $2.75M price tag on the basis of being a free asset alone, whereas you're going full opposite saying there's no good anywhere to be found in this signing or Kane, despite his current metrics suggesting otherwise and also despite coming off major surgery.
I'm pumping his current 5v5 numbers because you're absolutely roasting and caving in his 5v5 play relentlessly despite the numbers being good-but-unlucky so far.
Definitely would say I'm much closer to being fair to the signing than you.

It was *literally" brought up by the insiders how Kane/Kane's agent and the Wings discussed his trade deadline plans before signing him and how both parties looked at it as a win-win whether he helped the Wings into the Playoffs (again, not his fault for their record under him) or got them a free asset at the deadline.
Either way, it's going exactly according to the plan that was discussed *publicly* before Kane even put on a Wings jersey.
So, you're right. Not much of an argument.

A 2.75 million dollar player coming off major surgery and extended time off is solely responsible for a teams wins and losses? That's like blaming Kylington for losses whenever he comes back.
