ETA: To be fair, I have no idea which movie character we're talking about and it's been a while since I watched a Disney show so it may not be an Asian role.

While I have no issues with Disney re-casting old stories with different leads for live action (loved the new Little Mermaid but honestly most of them suck), I really wish instead they would write better original stories/characters for a new generation. Snow White is a problematic story now? Fine, write something new and empowering with new characters in a new world. I want more original stories with amazing characters instead of a swath of pandering, soulless remakes.

As for movies that topped my expectations:

Top Gun: Maverick. This was honestly one of the most fun things I've ever seen in the theater. Such a great experience, I left totally buzzing.
The Martian: Really wasn't expecting to love this movie as much as I did.
Parasite: I was hesitant going into this one because I worried that the subtitles would be distracting, but I was totally immersed and forgot I was reading the dialogue after a few minutes. It's pretty incredible that the brain can do that. This movie actually opened my up to a lot more South Korean films, which are amazing.

Parasite is a good one. Lots of hype around it after its release. Lived up to it for sure.

How the heck did I forget about Saving Private Ryan? The definitive war film of a generation that inspired one of the greatest TV miniseries of all time. That movie was hyped to the moon and was every bit as good - and better - as any review or recommendation.

To this day everytime I watch it I develop a new appreciation for it.

Except for the cheese scene at the end of the plane flying over.

It was such a good journey until then.

I'm just about to finish up the "every couple of years" watching of Band of Brothers. Perfection.

It's been said already but Infinity War was the first one that popped into my head.

Sky high expectations, unsure how they were going to bring this universe they built all together, and then it exceeded expectations in everyway.

Then End Game was disappointing but I think part of that was just that Infinity War was pretty much perfect that there was nowhere to go but down.

The ending of Infinity War was nearly perfect. The Silence in the credits was absolutely haunting.

Nope. Because I was just like, they'll all be back so who gives af?

I don't even remember if they all did come back, but I'm going to assume they did so they can keep the money train rolling. Or maybe they went into the splitsville metaverse or whatever tf that stupid crap is.

This is a bull#### take, for anyone who watched it on opening day, the crowd sat there in absolute awe and silence for a substantial portion of the credits. Even if it was to be undone, and even if in the 30 properties since they've been too disjointed with acknowledging it, in the moment it had a big impact for any audience member who cared.

IDK, the crowd sits there in silence all the time, especially when waiting for post-credits scenes. I wouldn’t chalk it up to everyone being in “awe” or assuming that every audience member cared.

There is a big difference between a theater full of people sitting in silence, and the white noise of people shuffling around or whispering to eachother.

Opening night of a Marvel movie would be filled with the biggest fanboys/fangirls, so i could see it.

I watched it weeks after it came out with a decidedly movie-goer crowd and i wouldn't say it left the same impression.

"oh no, green lady is gone. Anyway"

Also, the Last Samurai. It had everything that I look for in a trailer, and it's always a treat to get a high quality samurai movie that is in english. Ken Wantanabe just elevated this movie beyond reason, and an amazing supporting cast top to bottom. Cruise actually acted, which he is capable of. That movie is still great, in my estimation.
Man, Last Samurai is one of my all time faves. I love renaissance Japanese culture, had massive expectations, and just came out so much more satisfied than i thought i would. I saw it twice in theatres, and watched several more the past years streaming/tv

has to be one of the best late night, had too many to drink, "sign along" (say lines of the movie) movies going.

Just don't know why you guys have to revise history. That movie probably had among the highest expectations in the history of popular cinema, possibly only matched by Star Wars 1 & 7. In general it delivered and hit pretty hard for the audience, those who waited 2-3 weeks to see if knew what happened at the end anyways, because it was impossible to exist in the world without knowing.

And of course there is a difference between people sitting in actual silence and people shuffling around making white noise, everyone has heard real silence and knows the difference.

The fact that a growing number of people have not enjoyed the offerings over the past 5 years has little impact on how that movie hit at the time.

For some of the audience. There’s obviously a group of people that this absolutely crushed it for on every level, and there’s a lot of people where it was a cool, fun movie with pretty low stakes because it’s inherently silly and that’s OK.

What are you even arguing against? That some people weren’t blown away by it or shocked into silence and the people who claim they weren’t are lying? That seems crazy.
