I meet more people off this website IRL than probably any user here. Usually about 10 a year. I have built business relationships with I'd guess at least 100 posters on this site over the years and deal with them every few years or so when they need to upgrade their car or get service etc...

I'd say 2/3-3/4 of them have stopped posting on the site, and every single time the same reasoning comes up. How far left and hostile certain member of the board became. They made the site completely unenjoyable for anyone that had any sort of conservative opinion. These aren't mouth breathing hillbillies either. Successful, upper middle class, and even some very well off and couple well known local people who stayed anonymous.

It wasn't enough to simply disagree, it always had to be filled with petty insults and the insinuation anyone who wasn't in the little woke brigade or whatever it was, is a mouth breathing moron. I am also not the only person that these people came after for not adhering to the groupthink and had two different users on two separate occasions email false accusations to my employer. It's the reason I fell of the face of the earth for a couple years, and the reason I only post once in a blue moon now.

The site was taken over by a bunch of leftist bullies berating anyone with a remotely conservative opinion. It's very easy to see too. Just look at any political poll on the site. They always lean super left, and totally contradict any poll of the general population of Alberta.

It's a harsh truth, but it's what eroded the user base.

Anyway, this is a thread about pop-up ads which personally, I don't care about. It's a free site that has bills to pay. Maybe offer a premium membership for say $20 bucks a year to go Ad free. I'd have no issue with something like that. This site has provided a great service to fans especially on the hockey side of the forum that it should be remunerated. Nothing good is free.

I am sure the people leaving the site part of this post is true but the bolded part is compete BS.

And this is coming from someone who has voted, volunteered for, donated to the PC's, Reform, UCP, Alliance etc. for 20+ years.

While not in the lake of fire crew I am a life long conservative with right wing views and none of what you say is close to true.

This site is genuinely a pain to use.

I’ve genuinely stopped using other sites for similar reasons. The only thing going for it is that I’m emotionally invested in the site over a long time.

Edit: I came on here to post about something else and ended up coming to this thread first because of the ammoyance.

Are there actually any forums online that are growing? Any of the ones I visit (or have visited in the past) all seem to be populated by the same small group of people who have been posting there since the early 2000s.

There's a tv forum I go to sometimes, and I just looked at a few threads on the forum and there's basically only one regular poster with a join date after 2010, and he joined in 2015. If you see a recent sign-up date, 99% of the time they're either a troll or a spambot.


It seems to just be the nature of the beast.

The nature of the social media apps (Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, etc) and more introverted activities have eroded ability to hold conversation in younger generations, so they don’t seek out a method to partake in it. One way comments on a Tik Tok video are their connection to the outside world.

End of the day, making it a right/left issue is silly, but then taking it a step further and saying it’s actually just a left issue is absurd. It’s too bad pylon got a couple nasty emails, having people take it too far sucks, but then pretending that nobody else has experienced that and quoting people who use terms like “groupthink” or call the board “communist” as though they aren’t obviously part of whatever problem there might be and should instead have their opinions be given any weight just makes it impossible to take someone seriously.

If someone says they aren’t on CP because it’s too communist, they’re like just a bit of an #######, and absolutely someone who contributes more to some online left/right divide than 99% of the posters here.

Dragging the discussions here to levels of a Facebook comment section. I think the left ones get more leniency from other posters however, because others who agree with them let the posting style slide.

If anyone reads CalgaryPuck thinking it's a leftist, communist, socialist echo chamber is in an alt-right fascist echo chamber themselves. The CP posting demographic is right of centre, which is EXACTLY why I read the political threads here. I live in a Liberal stronghold, my community is union to the bone, Hell, Glace Bay, the community next to Sydney and my wife's hometown still celebrates and closes down for Davis Day.

I want different perspectives. Alas, social media has shifted to where echo Chambers cause us to think we're centre and the norm, and everyone else is a lunatic.

Yoho doesn’t get leniency? They’d be permabanned on every other forum I’ve ever posted on and that includes multiple subreddits.

They knowingly post misinformation and right wing propaganda that borders on hate speech. The misinformation can have real world effects, especially as it relates to the dangerous info they’ve posted about coivd.

Not only that but they then refuse to engage at all, they just continue to post links and tweets for far right extremist opinions. We’re talking about the people who support white supremacy and hate speech in our country.

And we should be ok with it in the name of “both sides”? It’s gross.

It’s laughable when people talk about toxic left wing posters. Ooh the left wing brigade is mean to people. Well Yoho is promoting the kind of ####ed up hate speech that gets people killed, either due to scientific misinformation or hate speech towards the LGBTQ community. These people are actually dying by violence and suicide caused by the nut jobs people like Yoho is championing on CP but we’re worried about being too mean in political discussions. Yoho gets tons of leniency, he doesn't get a pass because he rarely, if ever, actually engages in discussion, he posts biased opinion pieces from unreliable or flat out liars and pretends as though they add anything to the discussion.

There are plenty of people on the "left" that I disagree with but at least they attempt to back their views with actual facts and opinions based on reasoned takes.

Yoho, and many others on the right, rarely do it because there is no justification of their views at this point other than their "team" supports it or it goes against Ottawa, Trudeau or the NDP.
