My only concern is the Flames decides to make a run at the playoffs again instead of doing a huge fire sale at the trading deadline to acquire future assets.

To make a run for the playoffs a team must win games.

Already up against it.
The math is going to be very tough if they have even a couple more games in this skid.
I don't think there will be much concern when they're double digits out of it on December 1st.

And that why it is a concern. There's still some 73 games left in the season! The Sharks at least got rid of all their core players. Flames still have most their cores signed long term or in transition!

The way this is going, that’s not going to be a concern.
This is an awful roster.

Now what will it take for Huby to have a Karlsson-type season?

He's 3 years younger so we just have to be patient for 2 more seasons. Then watch out, 100 point season in 2025/26!

As a team they are very bad. Individually there are some nice pieces that can hopefully bring back some decent returns. Now if management is smart enough to do the right thing is another question...

It’s an $80M roster - they can’t all be dusters.
They’re not a team. There’s nothing and no one to unite them. They don’t know each other, so they don’t care about each other. Not the way they need to.
Adding a top-3 pick, or better yet, first overall, may put a little pep back on their step.
Lindholm and Hanifin have to go, and Markstrom too. All will have great value at the deadline.
Reset.

A trade. The minute he's traded he'll start producing. Even yesterday, with him playing terrible, right before our first goal, he sent a great pass to Kadri for a 2 on 1, where Kadri completely blew it and gave it away.
He didn't forget how to play, our system and our players don't have the elements he needs to be successful, we're a slow, non-offensive perimeter team that generates only low risk chances.

How do our first round picks work for 2024 and 2025?
Are we going to lose a potential top 10 pick to Montreal?

2024 pick likely isn't in play at all. This is the only way Montreal gets it:
If Calgary’s 2024 1st round pick falls between 20 and 32 inclusively, Montreal will have up to 48 hours before the 2024 NHL Draft to decide to take this pick

I think if the Flames truly want a top 3 pick they need to keep the current set of players. From what I have seen that will be an assured outcome.

I agree on it looking like they have a lack of leadership and direction. But not knowing each other? 18 out of the 24 players listed on their roster were here last season.

The biggest concern is that the Flames are 100% stuck with $17.5M in cap for the next 6 years between Kadri & Huberdeau and then still $10.5M for 2 more after that.
Best case scenario is they become Benn/Seguin but even then you're hoping for a hat-trick of home run picks in one draft lol
Hope is slim to none for this franchise the next few years, unless Huby & Kadri miraculously gain even half their talent back.

The biggest concern for the team should be complete fan apathy. Nobody gives a #### about this iteration of the team, and for good reason. Time for some introspection.
I keep replying the "I need some honest answers" Simpsons scene when I think about how this team is run behind the scenes.
Edwards: Jonathan Huberdeau's production, how's that holding up?
Conroy: It's uh ... uh, steady.

Markstrom has a continuing contract, not likely movable at the deadline.

It’s still not enough time - the core of a team needs to grow up together, from the time they’re 18/19. They go to development camps together, they form bonds, they anchor the team.
By the time they get to be 23-25, they’ve played with each other for five years or more. They know each other like gloves. They legitimately love each other. You see that in successful teams all the time.
Assembling a team of mercenaries like it’s a video game doesn’t work.
Tkachuk and Gaudreau were the centre. With the centre gone, they expected Huberdeau and Lindholm/Kadri to be that new centre.
They’re not.
When the centre collapses, the circle cannot hold.
The collapse we’re witnessing is pure physics, and out of the inevitable explosion, new stars will form.
The cosmic ballet continues.

One injury puts Mark Giordano into the Leafs top four, and as good as he's been the 40 year old doesn't have the stamina to play that. Last year he was completely gassed in the playoffs. Leafs will for sure add a quality depth guy toward the deadline. Can't see Treliving passing on Tanev (or Zadorov) if they're available. That 1st will definitely be in play
