His agent said that they have no interest in engaging in contract talks until they see how the season plays out.

I get it from their perspective though. If he negotiates now, he isn't negotiating from a position of strength seeing as how he missed a full year. They are probably hoping he has a big season.

This is such a non-issue, though, since the option exists at any time for the team to put a player in situations like this on LTIR. Kylington's cap hit had no effect on the team's overall cap situation last year, and it will not again this year if he is out of the lineup for a length of time.

Go back last week and see what his agent had to say about his chances of Oliver re-signing in Calgary. A year after the Flames paid his full salary, gave him full and private support on the matter. It was not a good look on Oliver's agent part. Hopefully not fueled by Oliver . . . .

Because someone suggested it was hit-related. It wasn't, at least not according to what I've been told. I'm just saying it's more than speculation that leads me there.

LTIR doesn't give you cap space though, it only allows you to exceed the cap if you are already at the cap, and only for as long as the player is out. If the Flames chose to use LTIR to exceed the cap and he came back later in the season, the team would have to likely waive someone. You also can't accrue cap space over the course of the season, which could have implications at the trade deadline.

Cap space is an asset that would add flexibility when facilitating trades, LTIR doesn't really help with that.

This is hard news to see for Flames fans and Oliver. I hope he gets through this, but the expectations of him returning need to be lowered now.

The weird part is that it almost feels like it's the Flames that made the call with the use of the word "determined".

Maybe there is something they thought came up here as part of all the mental and physical evaluations yesterday.

How does a guy that physically fit fail his testing?

No #### it wasn't physical, we've known that for months lol

The source: Kylington himself in an interview.

Hopefully it’s a minor thing. Big reason for any optimism I have this year taps into his skillset and becoming a faster team with better puck movement from the back end.
What would your reaction be if they didn't issue a release? You would bitch at the ####ty organization that won't tell you what is going on.

To be fair, so did Gaudreau until he had to actually sign.

Hanifin one intrigues me because I wonder if he would take like a 2 year deal.

-He's only 26 (27 at start of next season).
-His preferred destination is Boston...they are in cap hell
-The salary cap is anticipated to go up substantially in 2 years.
-He'd be 29 when hitting UFA and could still set himself up for a huge 8 year deal while he's under 30.

Would he stay in Calgary on a 2 year deal, open himself up to be a UFA when the salary cap explodes, and it buys both him and the Flames a bit more time.

He should not be discussing re-signing at all at any point yet. It was a bad look and I am sure the Flames did not like the comment.

It's not a bad look. It's an agent doing agent things. Of course he is going to spin this in an effort to get his client the best deal he can. That:s his job.

I don’t understand what irritated you. I thought he was asked about the current status of his two clients, Backlund and Kylington. And he answered the question, with a completely logical answer. They aren’t currently talking about contracts.
