It worked so well last time they thought hey let's try it again, except with longer contracts this time.

I don’t disagree with that at all. But they tried that year. It was only when they failed and Iggy was up for UFA that they traded him at the deadline. And they didn’t trade the rest until later, when it was clear they couldn’t compete. Hell, they kept those guys for another season for the most part. They never embraced a tank - it happened accidentally.

Flames traded their 4th round pick that year for TJ Galiardi otherwise they could have taken Kaprizov in the 4th round.

Conroys transparency is pretty incredible . He has been groomed , been around some of the best hockey people in the game but has remained Craig and not some watered down version of someone else.

His relationship with Jarome and Gelinas as former team mates and now executives makes him better because those 2 will help him lift the heaviest of stuff.

When he speaks of the alumni and the past experiences he's absorbed being in the right place and the right time it's amazing.
...let's be clear though he EARNED this job.

I've way more appreciation for Craig today and have always respected his heart on his sleeve approach . We could all learn something about this man's humility .

Good job Craig Conroy . Glad your our GM.

Warner had an interesting story about Kipper and Hartley. He said that Kipper essentially cut his career short because of Hartley. That Kipper left angry because of him. He essentially wouldn't play one more game for the guy and the team chose Hartley(similar to the Savard situation).

Listening to the interview, Conroy references a player the Flames liked who was selected one pick ahead of their own pick early in the draft. That player has gone on to be really good. Without having looked, yet. I wonder who that was?

We were talking about that earlier in the thread.

Dive in Kerr! That's a big issue not so much the specific but the bigger Canadian issue.

Or why did Fox change his mind (if he did) did he feel blocked?

It was put on a platter Kerr ...

For sure it was Matthew Wood.

Guy is going to be a beast.

NVM read too quickly. Like others have said maybe it's Mercer or Kucherov. IIRC flames were really high on him.

Pretty sure the Flames liked Mercer before moving down in 2020. Could be that. Maybe Sillinger (rumoured to have been really interested in '21) though if that's the case, I'd honestly rather have Coronato personally and I think the Flames are very happy to have him as well.

Forgot about this. Could see it. Was really hoping for him to be there as well tbh.

I'm guessing it's either Nick Suzuki going 3 picks ahead of Valimaki, or Kempe going a couple of picks ahead of Mason McDonald.

This kind of stuff happens all the time I bet. Including this last draft. OTOH, the Flames got Tkachuk because he fell a couple spots through Vancouver being dumb.

The Flames Media Department are going to have to buy one of these comically oversized vaudevillian hooks....

Mercer could have been who Conroy was talking about. It sounded like he was referring to a player that went one spot ahead of the Flames pick and it also sounded like it was from years prior, not this last draft.

Silinger too. I think a few draft boards had him going to Calgary and it sounded like Sam Constanteno kept saying the Flames liked him.

Perhaps, but I do think the Flames wanted Bennett.

Can’t recall who exactly wrote the article but an Edmonton based writer for the Athletic wrote a piece about the Oilers taking Draisaitl over Bennett and it was a huge internal debate. One scout said after they made the pick he looked over at the Flames table and a number of Flames guys couldn’t hide their excitement. Guys were high giving one another.

Flames actively tried to move up to get Draisatl, so yeah, don't believe anything ever from an oiler fan or Edmonton based writer.

Also Conroy has spoken about just missing out on Kucherov in the past.
