Hot take: “Just get in” is an entirely valid strategy and actually more reliable than a prolonged rebuild. In either case, the eventual Cup winner comes down more to luck and timing than talent, as all teams in the playoffs have enough talent to win.

Hot Takes instead of bold predictions:

• Lindholm wasn't the defensive powerhouse he was portrayed to be on the Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk line. Tkachuk was.
• The Swedish mafia and Backlund in particular are the reason behind the coaching carousel
• Hanifin is a 15G, 50P defenseman on any top team in the league.
• A bald Mangiapane is a 40G scorer in this league.
• Out of Wolf, Markstorm, and Vladar. Vladar is the best goalie.

-I think McDavid is a one trick pony and a bit of a PP specialist these days. The thing is he is so good at it, and the numbers are so glowing, that it blinds hockey people to the reality that he's whelming at even strength and other facets of the game. He was really mediocre in the playoffs since less of it was on special teams. I think I've only been impressed by one run of his (2022).

-I don't think the Panthers are very good. I think they caught lightning in a bottle and ran on adrenaline as a team for 2 months. Flash in the pan for sure. In fact, the shade publicly thrown by Keith Tkachuk late in the season may the be main catalyst of that entire run. But after some time off after the ECF they lost the momentum, and the finals weren't really a contest.

-Going off of point #2, I think the eastern conference might not be as good as it once was since Tampa got a little worse. A team that would've been a 10th? seed in the west won the conference and ended up being gum under Vegas' armored boot.

-Building off that point, I think the western conference is better than we think it is, and we likely saw the real best on best happen in the western playoffs before Vegas came out on top.

Luke warm take:

I think Conroy is on the right track with his staff hires and I trust he knows what players need to moved and the types that need to be acquired, but the process is going to be slow because he is a little handcuffed at the moment. I am generally optimistic about the long term future, but I think the next few seasons are going to be a little painful and hope the fanbase can be patient.

Slightly hotter take:

We are going to find out pretty quickly next season that Darryl Sutter wasn't the biggest issue and that the major problems are still in the room. In fact, I think it will become apparent that Sutter, even while making the players miserable, still got the most anyone could out this group. Some players might have better individual seasons now that Sutter is gone, but others will have worse seasons, and the end results won't be any better.

I know that sounds really pessimistic, and I am a little pessimistic about the short term, but I think long term, the team is in the right hands. It is just going to take a lot of time to surgically remove all the diseased parts.
