Now he can make one phone call to Russia and see if any KHL team wants him. What a piece of garbage.

It appears the Coyotes went to Costco to shop for their Galchenyuk replacement ...

Sounds like he might prefer the front lines.

I wouldn't have though that the NHL would allow the termination of contract for accusations. I'm not defending him; I think he's a POS, but really, an unproven allegation shouldn't be enough for termination of contract. Do we not still play by "innocent until proven guilty"

That's a principle that applies to a court of law... not a court of public opinion.

And if you’re the Coyotes, how likely do you think it is that the cops made it all up just so they could drag Galchenyuk through the process of getting the charges dismissed when the body can footage comes out?

And if you're the Coyotes how much do you even care? This is just simply more trouble than a League Minimum replacement player is worth.

Buh-bye...

I can actually see why this happened. The way traffic stops work in Russia/Ukraine, you essentially bribe the cop to not give you a ticket. The cops themselves know which cars/people are untouchable, and almost never stop luxury cars, because they're almost always well connected and are more trouble than they're worth.

The reason all cops are 'corrupt' is because as soon as someone starts working as a cop he's given a quota he has to bring in to the station's chief monthly so he can keep his job. The rest of the money is his, and it's up to his discretion how much he takes advantage of it.

As for Galchenyuk, it's hard to jump to conclusions because we don't have all of the information. I assume he tried a bribe and it backfired, or perhaps he was under the influence/having a really bad day. Not making excuses for him, just shedding some light on the situation from the other side.

He was born in Milwaukee…. And after living in Russia as a kid, he’s been in the States/Canada since he was a teenager. This isn’t a case of “oh I don’t understand how things work here”.

Isn't Galchenyuk more or less American raised? His formative teenage years, as well as adult life look to have been almost exclusively spent in North America. He should have a pretty good grasp of how police stops over here work by now.

I see your point, but I can't see how he could have been confused at all with the way North American policing is carried out, at least for the most part.

You're underestimating the cultural importance of being overtly racist during a traffic stop in Russian society. Are we just going to rip the heart and soul out of Russian culture for our feelings?

Yeah I had no idea he was born and raised in the States. I just assumed he was born and raised in Russia.

Aren't you being a little racist towards Russians with that statement? That said, I agree that racial slurs have no place in our society.

As an aside, a lot of people here are being low key racist towards Russians, and no one really cares. With statements like "lazy Russian", suggesting all Russians are drunks, or asking why would a guy like Sharangovich want to come back home to Belarus for the summer. It doesn't bother me, but I just wanted to point out that it's really easy to be racist when you group an entire nation into one.

Funny. I've known people who have lived "here" all their lives who still don't know how things work.
