Is this where all the unreasonable outrage is today? Other threads are quiet and calm.

Doubt anyone can be that fussed about losing a fringe NHL player.

It's because he scored lots in the WHL. So did Ryan Duthie...

Wish him all the best, hope he gets a legit shot with the Caps. Its too bad he left but understandable. The Flames brought this on themselves but I have no doubt Conroy has learned from the mistakes of Treliving & Sutter.

Really? There was a TON of fuss about him not getting NHL time and plenty of posters recently insisting we should give him another contract.

If he becomes a productive NHLer I will be filled with absolute unfathomable rage towards this organization for a couple days.

I hope he does well. Seems like a good guy and I don't see why anyone wouldn't want someone to achieve their dreams.

I think he is still a real long shot to have a long and productive NHL career, but I don't see an issue with giving him a shot. He has the physique of a teenager, so it won't be easy. I know the sample size with the Flames big club was too small to make a fair judgement, but from what I saw, his speed and decision making didn't seem like enough to compensate for the lack of size. Maybe it will come with more experience though.

I took that as more Sutter criticism and less about Phillips being a legit NHL player.

I agree. On a similar note if you know your size is holding you back eat more and get in the gym. It’s been done before.

Maybe ultimately he wasn’t a prospect for the Flames.

Guess we’ll see how he does. I think that will end the debate.

Who watched him in the Wranglers postseason? Then you know he will never survive in the NHL, dude spent 3/4 of the time on his ass. We lost a minor league player, no big deal.

Guess Zary will never make it either, by that criteria ... hoo boy did he have a brutal playoff.

What does Matty turn out to be in the NHL?
  • Waivers before season finished
  • One season doesn't get picked back up
  • Bottom 6 - 20 Points
  • Bottom 6 - 30 Points
  • Bottom 6 - 40 Points
  • Top 6 - 50 Points
  • Top 6 - 60 Points
  • Top 6 - 70+ Points
Would be a cool (bittersweet) story to see him become a 50+ point NHL player.

Bottom 6 and 40 points due to size.

Don't judge a young players by his training camp(s). Pelletier will be an NHL player but his camps were awful. Put a lot of pressure on himself. Whereas a guy like Tanner Glass knew how to impress but couldn't maintain it

How many bottom-6 guys hit 40 points? Especially ones wit 3 career NHL games?

I agree he didn't have a great playoff but Zary is solid, totally different subject than getting crushed every shift. Phillips doesn't have the thickness and build that a St Louis or a Fleury had nor does he have the magic elusiveness of a Gaudreau. Sure, he could float around and score in the AHL when games were not that important but as soon as the physicality of the playoffs start he spends more time lying on the ice than skating on it. I like Phillips, he seems like a really nice guy but he won't survive NHL hockey.
