Fairly accurate statement, but as someone who just used Marketplace to buy a car and likely overpaid because the market is crappy, it's just as much the sellers that are driving up the market and overvaluing their stuff as it is buyers low-balling.

So, I would not be surprised that it is just as likely that teams looking to sell are overvaluing their players.

People are not adjusting the trade ideas based on what we are seeing.

Let's trade Lindholm for 3 OV

Lets get a 1st for Backlund

Hayes, Hall and Ry Jo for nothing.

First thing that I think is, uh oh the return on Backlund and Toffoli might not be high end picks and prospects.

Toffoli trade comes in and people are disappointed, but he landed a lot more than Hall did. So seems fair, just awful compare to what some were posting 3 weeks ago.

I guess if you're going to allow players, agents or yourself as GM to blab to the media of who wants out, you have to expect that the first wave of proposals and returns aren't likely to be great from your colleagues who keep their cards closer to their vests.

You also then can use the media to say you're not happy as GM, with the proposals.

Not a fan of this. Treliving's predecessor tried this style of transparency with the fans simply as a " do the opposite" of Sutter as GM. Let's hope Conroy navigates it more responsibly.

Underwhelming depends on what the flames are looking for. If the flames are looking for roster players but are only being offered draft picks, that would be very disappointing. If they want draft picks but aren't happy with the quality of them, that's a different and more understandable stance.

Maybe the wanted a 1st and couldn’t get it so went this direction

Imo this a a classic buy low sell high trade. Often these trades are viewed poorly at first by fans. Really we got a younger Toffoli who is a better skater because he had a bad year or playoffs

Better getting this than going for a brouwer because he had a good year and good playoffs

I'll be honest I didn't see the Toffoli thread before that post. With that said I'm modestly happy with the trade. Young player with upside, an extra pick in the draft although not a great one and all for a player that wants out.

Overall it's a good thing

Probably depends on the given day, as all of his deals will either be wizard level or complete dog####, given the nuanced discussion here.

So here's the thing.

We just traded a 73 point, .89 PPG (generally about a .7ppg, but a career average .64 PPG) 31 year old player for a reclamation project and a 3rd.

We're sitting here contemplating offering a 29 year old 64 point (generally a .8 ppg player, but a .69 PPG career average) an 8 year deal worth $9M'ish.

Yeah, my brain is reaching but extending Lindholm at an above market value into those later years looks dumber by the moment.

A couple more trades like this one, and I won't even be watching next season. Just need to pick up a new hobby.

Them, at the draft: "We know you have to move these guys before they walk for nothing. So this offer is much better than nothing."
Us: "Well then I guess they'll just walk for nothing."

Them, at the deadline: "Ready to deal yet?"
Us: "I don't know, are you ready to make a serious offer?"

Us, next June: "Ok, fine we'll take your offer."
Them: "Offer? Why would I offer you anything for players I can sign for free in two weeks?"

But a guy who has been nominated for the Selke? Some suggest he is better than Dubois and Dubois just got $8.5 mil.

I would love to see a rebuild as much as anyone but the trades rolling in seem to be bad in comparison to what I thought player would go for a few weeks ago. It might make sense to lock guys up who want to be here and see what the cap does in the next 3 years. Lindholm at $9 mil in a $95 to $100 mil cap is easily worth it. Cap might take 4 years to get there but he's 28 right now.

Kevin Hayes at 50% got Philadelphia a 6th round pick

I think this trade might have had a big impact on the return of Toffoli, both players are the same age except Hayes has a longer contract at 3.57 mil for the next 3 years. Toffoli has 1 year remaining at 4.25. I think its more reasonable to think Toffoli has a 50-60 point season over another 70+ season based on his career history. I imagine Kevin Hayes will be a 40-50 point player for the next few seasons in St. Louis. If Calgary was able to retain on Toffoli I think we would have seen a better return.

Philly - Retain on 3 years 3.5 mill just to dump

Flames - won’t retain 2 mill for one year for better assets.

You can only retain on three players. Maybe their plan is to retain on Lindholm, Hanifin and Backlund?

We still have a long way to go in this offseason. Maybe let the dust settle a little bit

Nah. This all points to re-tool which is hardly surprising

Well last I looked the flames still have 6 players with 1 year left until UFA and are only able to retain on 3 contracts so talking in absolutes right now doesn’t make sense to me. We just landed a 25 year old, cost controlled, bigger, stronger and faster player that is 6 years younger than Toff. Would have been nicer to get a 2nd but it’s still a decent trade considering Conny’s position.

Not a bad first trade to start his GM career in Calgary, let’s get a 1st++ package now for Hanifin!

Yep, even in the face of a mass exodus the Flames will continue being managed the way the Flames have always been managed it would seem.

I’m the dillhole for hoping for something better.

To the doom and gloomers… you realize there’s still 6 prominent players that could be dealt and an entire draft to get through that is as deep a draft as there’s been in near a decade? Right? Give him at least the rest of the week before declaring the direction of the team.
