no cap concerns because they ####ing sucked for years

Their most recent season is worse than the Flames worst season in franchise history

I never said the Flames would be better than them for eternity obviously...if you want to throw down, $100 says the Flames have more points next season

and I'm pretty certain you thought they would be decent last season too if we want to be calling posters out
They sucked 2 of the last 3 years. In the playoffs 4 years in a row before that. They lost Bob and Panarin and rebuilt. We lost Tkachuk and Johnny. We need to do the same

* Mid 1st or late 1st and a 2nd.
Meanwhile every media person I have heard said if Lindholm hits the market almost every team will be in on that.

Every other team would like to have a Lindholm on the roster. But very few A) need a top-2 centre, and B) are in the stage of their win/rebuild cycle to give up major assets for a 28 year old, and C) have the cap structure to take on a 7 x 8.5 contract going forward.

This is why trades are so rare in today’s NHL. Any player with a significant cap hit can only be taken on by a handful of teams. Even a superstar of Matthew Tkachuk’s calibre was an impossible ask for half of the teams on his trade list (VGK, COL, TB) because they simply couldn’t fit him into their structure.

They have finished in the top 12 of the NHL one time in their 23 year franchise history with most seasons in the bottom 5-10

He's talking about future outlook which isn't a single season. Being better than a team next year doesn't mean much when your future trajectory is likely going down. I'd rather suck the next 5 years and get top end prospects than be average the next 5 years and get average prospects. The Flames should be proactive and start turning over guys trying to get ready for the next iteration of the team but they will likely sacrifice that to maybe make the playoffs. 7 UFAs this year and 6 could have decent returns. Pretty ideal time to at a minimum try to inject youth into your organization. But they will likely half ass a "retool" and be back in the middle as always.

I know 28 is not old per se, but for a player one year from UFA, his 8 year contract will end when he ‘s 38.

That contract will largely cover non-prime years.

So they should be good now because they got Rick Nash 1st overall in 2002

Your point was of course they have tons of prospects cause they have sucked for years. They made the playoffs 4 times last 7 years. But when they lost 2 franchise players they traded others out and had a plan to draft new ones and now they look good. Flames should do the same as their ceiling in the next 3 years isn’t as high as the lowly blue jackets

I’ll bet $100. Jackets still have cap to burn and moves to make. Which was my point why I put them on the list of teams that could pass the flames if they got Bedard. They lost lottery and it might happen
