FWIW The last rankings I could find on elite prospects (March 19th) has Kosick ranked 6th (5'6" 106lbs) and Iginla at 14th (5'10" 148lbs). Virtually the same age (days apart).

The more I think about it, the idea that playing in Calgary with the Iginla name at such a young age, would be added pressure the kid likely doesn't need.

I hope when the Oil Kings are in in Calgary, the fans still cheer him on though.

If this thread is any indication, this is 100% true.

It also occurred to me that Joe himself probably has little connection of living in Calgary. He would have been around 4.5 years old when Iggy was traded to Pittsburgh.

This 5'5" 110 lb Noah Kosick better be Messi on ice, or he will be booed out of the building.

People keep linking this kid's height and weight like that can't take a massive jump over the summer.

Ya'll are wild.

His dad was 6' 187lbs so very likely chance he fills out during his time with Hitmen. Has elite skill already so just waiting on some growth.

If he plays for them. There seems to be some chatter that he is considering the NCAA route though.

I get that the Hitmen are Calgary's team... but in the grand scheme of things, I don't think it really matters where someone plays their Junior hockey does it? I mean other than personal development, and some skills-based techincal development between leagues (like WHL vs OHL vs QMJHL or even CHL vs NCAA, etc).

Ok, so maybe it does matter, but not really at the level of "Calgary or Edmonton" (other than sink factor, of course). It's not like the Oil Kings drafting Iginla precludes the Flames from drafting him, should the opportunity and desire arise.

The only reason it matters is because Iginla is Calgary's favorite son, and now his son is playing for our biggest rival city.

Imagine if the Hitmen drafted Messier or Gretzky's kid.

It's not like 1994 and Edmonton drafting 5 spots ahead of Dallas picks [checks notes] Steve Kelly.

Only Calgary and Edmonton could turn some 14 year old kid's performance into some dick measuring contest.

Just wait until Joe and Tij are drafted by some team with picks that Treliving traded away.

Yeah, I get all that lol. I'm just saying it's not like the Flames passed on him and Oilers took him. It's just major junior.

Was at a season tickets event for the oil kings today where they had a hot stove with the gm and head scout. Talked about Iginla and briefly touched on why Calgary probably passed on him. One comment from the GM was the hitmens head scout has coached Kosick in the past. Also said he was probably a top 5 talent and they are clearly expecting him to grow. Didn’t mention college specifically, but got the sense with the connection and everything that he’ll be in Calgary and not go the College route.

Also speculated that all the pressure for a 16 year old to go to the city where his dad became a hall of famer just may have made them pass as well.

Got to watch about 20 minutes of practice with all the newly drafted and all the younger players. Iggy was in the arena too watching. Pretty cool to be watching the child of my favourite player growing up. Excited to see him in a few years even if it is in Edmonton.

That’d be neat.

Apparently Kosick is considering the NCAA route. Probably noteworthy that that was the route his father took as well, playing 4 seasons at Michigan.

Iginla wouldn't have been a reach and would have been a PR boon for the Hitmen. Especially if Kosick chooses not to play in the WHL, it will look even worse for Calgary.
