Which is why I'm thinking that maybe, the ownership is confident Tre will stay. The uncertainty might only be for the fans and media. Perhaps Tre has a few asks on his next contract, which ownership has already decided they're okay with agreeing to. Because, yes, if another GM is coming in, he'll want his own people.
Or maybe ownership has decided the next move will be either Tre stays or Conroy and Maloney fill the role if he leaves.

I remember how he looked pretty frazzled and he was like "All I know is that tomorrow we're playing the Colorado Rockies". Somehow the Flames actually won that game after supposedly intercepting Saprykin at an Airport on his way back to Russia and inserted into the lineup.
I couldn't imagine how toxic this board would be if the team made a move like that now.

I can very much see Treliving wanting to stay but not wanting Sutter to coach. So if there was a way for Darryl to gracefully step away from that position (without the optics of getting canned or the team firing him before his new deal even kicks in), I'm sure they're exploring it.
I also have to think this was a difficult year for Sutter. Does he want to be back knowing how badly things went this year (and assuming he acknowledges he was part of the reason why)? You can blame it all on goaltending but there was enough smoke with Huberdeau, Kadri, playing the vets and not playing the kids, etc to conclude there was a lot of friction this year.
Either way I'm happy to see Conroy will be back and I suppose Maloney as well.

Just ask Sutter to take over player development, he’s great at that

I’m guessing that if Treliving does move on, one of those 2 are going to take over as GM and they have already agreed to keep the on as an assistant.

To me is says that if Treliving bows out, it's Sutter's job, whether its official or not.

It could be. But is there any evidence that is Treliving’s preferred course of action?
If Treliving is concerned about autonomy, and he was supposedly grantedthat last time, it’s hard to reconcile with the Sutter hire. I’m curious to know what lengths the organization would go to prove to BT that he has autonomy.

Wait, Saprykin was at the airport? Was he over being with the baby Flames? I don't recall this.

So maybe Tree does have a plan, and yeah - he wants it to be backed and it's the only way he'll come back. I could see this being part of this all, and it's why if Tree does come back I'll be pretty excited because you know he's not coming back to just keep doing the same thing over and over. He's a smart guy, if he's back - he's coming back with a plan.

I've got a plot of land to sell you. It fronts river on two sides, gets a large volume of traffic (potential commercial purpose?) and has received tens of millions in government funds for renewal and upkeep.
It is yours for a buck if you promise to maintain it

Didn't the Leafs try that once with like 4 assistant GMs? I seem to think Nick Beverly was one of them. Or maybe Cliff Fletcher?

Move Sutter to POHO so he gets a nice title and is still involved. Promote Love.

Wouldn't work so well if there was bad blood between Sutter and Tre. Sutter suddenly becomes Tre's direct superior.

Sutter strikes me as a guy who would do well in a hockey personnel/POHO position in his advanced years.
I just think he's lost a step in terms of being personable and his ability to build rapport with players on an individual basis, which I think is crucial.
He's a brilliant hockey mind that knows winning but who I just wouldn't trust to make trades or directly coach players on a daily basis nowadays.

There's 8 million reasons Sutter ain't going anywhere. Not sure why this is so hard to comprehend for some people.

well there could be 126 million reasons why you want to keep Kadri and Huberdeau happy. I don't think this is that straight forward.
