They ain't winning a thing this year. They went on a nice streak here where everything and every bounce has gone their way.
Don't buy into the BS fire in their eye crap comes into play.
When things start going wrong, and they will, that team will fold faster then 5 year old playing at the world championship of poker, its in their nature. There's a reason why McDavid for all of his skills hasn't lead a team to a major championship.
The playoffs are a different beast. Last year the Oilers looked underwhelming in beating the kings got all kinds of breaks and ran into a cold goalie against the Flames, and got super hot unusual god fluke mode goaltending by Smith, and then got curb stomped by the Avs.
Their window is now, and I don't see a Stanley Cup contending team, they aren't going to sneak up on anyone this year, they're the hunted now and not the hunters. The bench is everything in the playoffs, and sorry, the Oilers don't got bench.
And then their window slams shut, with 8 million bucks in cap space and 15 players signed and Bouchard and Kostin looking for significant raises, its basically one season next year and then the questions start around sour puss and the holy diver staying.
I can't imagine a team that deserves less respect. They didn't build anything, they lotto'd their way to contention. Their arrogant, freddy Munster lookalike coach needs a good punch to the face.
Do you honestly think that this oilers team is going to beat an experienced Avs team with lots of depth, or a Bruins team or a Dallas? I don't they'll probably get by Seattle though that team has heated up.
Within the next few weeks, all we'll hear from up north is "Wah the refs screwed us", "Wah the league is conspiring against the Oilers", "Wah McDavid asked for a trade"
You know it and I know it.
And your welcome.

His junior team lost in the finals, and then he won a gold at the world championship, world juniors and U18. It is all his fault his teams in the NHL have not won?
The Pittsburgh teams that won were not the most talented teams depth wise either and they won off the backs of their star players.
The series against the Avs was a wild game 1, game 2 blow out, and one goal games in game 3 and 4. That series was closer than what the final result looked. If they don't deserve any respect over how they were built, than neither does Pittsburgh, Chicago, Tampa or Colorado--all teams that were really bad and picked high.
I want you to be right so bad but history says he will win

2005-06 Oilers had 5 players score 50 points or more. Four guys broke 60, two got to 70+. Four players with 20 goals and two more knocking on the door at 18 and 19.
2004 Flames: One 50-point player, one 60-point, one 70-point, and they’re all Iggy.
One 20g scorer, one 30g scorer, one 40g scorer - again, all Iggy.
Jarome was 26 points clear of Conroy, who could only manage 47 points (and 8 goals)
Shean Donovan was second on the team with 18, and half those came in one hot December, if I’m remembering right.
The 2006 Oilers look like the 2002 Red Wings by comparison.
And it didn’t matter because we had the best player and best goalie in the world at the time on the same team.

They made the playoffs and we didn’t. Even though Edmonton is essentially a large sewage lagoon it’s hard to say the Flames (91 points) are better than the Oilers (107 points) this season.
Hoping that changes during the offseason.

Really pushing that closest sweep in history narrative lol. That is the thing, McDavid should already have a cup and the Oilers have botched it so far. Their defence and goalies are still shaky.

This is not what I am saying, but what I said is a lot more accurate than the people who said they got demolished by the Avs which isn't true.

Timing has always been a bit of an issue with the Flames. They were bad in an era where the cap situations wasn't bad enough to leverage. They had a couple 1st rounders on the table which didn't go through (Ward and Ribeiro). The Ribeiro hurts a bit more as the player used his NTC to nix the deal when he was just going to get bought out.
Look at how teams on the down cycle are able to weaponize the cap, that wasn't' really part of the landscape or an option when the Flames were in their down cycle. Add that to a less than stellar draft class when they were on the bottom. Then a expansion draft, which forced their hand with Bennet.
The Oilers are far from a blueprint on how to build a team. There was a 90% chance of them getting Strome instead of McDavid. Which would have made the next year with Auston Matthews interesting as he appeared to be positioning himself to pull a Lindros if Edmonton was at the bottom again.

They got demolished by the Avs.
The Avs scored at will in that "series".
Sometimes they let the Oilers build a little lead, but when the Avs pushed it was no contest and the Oilers couldn't stop them.
The Jets in 21 was four close games, the Avs in 22 was boys vs men.
If it comes to it, with Makar and the other injured players back in? It might be a little closer but Colorado is still the clear favourite.
They've proven themselves. Coilers haven't.
Take a seat.

Well I am not going to "take a seat", but I will gladly continue the conversation.
Yes the Avs will remain the favourite. Oilers beat them the other night though. They can play with the Avs. If Makar comes back and is healthy and Landeskog returns and looks decent that will be a big upgrade for them, but lots of ifs there.
Listen, I will be as happy as anyone on here when they lose--but I am just preparing myself and trying to prepare others for the idea that they might win. They have three 100 point scorers and solidified their D. If goaltending holds up, look out.

Well, I don't understand, when getting swept isn't demolished then what is? They couldn't even win 1, ONE game. They got outscored 22-13 through the sweep, and got shutout in the second game.

3 on 3 OT on a PP gift against a team still resting top players.
Nowhere close to a measuring stick result.

two are still on the team and each have over 100 points. One is likely the best player in the league.
Yeah, it WAS funny when they were still losing.
They're not anymore.

The thread is called real talk. This isn't E=NG. But sure, tell me who I am a fan of. I have been a part of this board a lot longer than you have

I guess I look at it as game 1 and game 3 were one goal games with empty netters. Game 4 was OT.
But yeah looking at those games, I guess I underestimated how wild the shot total differences were so I will give you that.

Any one that says the Col-Edm series was close was legally blind and gets all their info from pom pom wavers.

That series is irrelevant to me. That Avs team got way worse, this Oilers team is way better.
The biggest thing this year is that it's the first time the Oilers are actually somewhat good without 97 and 29 on the ice.
54.9% GF (73 GF, 60 GA, +13) without McDavid and Draisaitl on the ice, and 52.3% xGF at 5V5 without those two on the ice.
That is a huge difference compared to last season: 42.0% GF without Draisaitl and McDavid on the ice last year (58 GF, 80 GA, -22), and 47.2% xGF.
That's 35 goal swing is massive, and why the Oilers are actually a true contender this year.
It sucks to see but it's the truth. They finally put a competent team around McDavid.
I really, really hope they play the Kings in round 1. Because the Kings have been close to as good as the Oilers have the last 40 games, and Korpisalo has been really good for them. If they get Winnipeg or Seattle that's an easier first round...but Kings, Vegas, Colorado becomes a pretty tough path to making the finals.

Alright well agree to disagree on their chances this year. I think they are the second best team in the west going into the playoffs. We can agree that we are rooting for them to lose and Richmond FC to win

Yeah somehow the kings have found a recipe to slow those guys down more than any other team
