It isn't just a bout not recovering from a career year though - shooting percentage ebbs and flows throughout the seasons of a player's career. All players.

Some people are uncomfortable with the word 'luck', which I can understand. The statistical term is random volatility or random distribution. Doesn't matter what you call it, it is absolutely a thing.

Toffoli must hit at least one post a game. He has mastered the art.

does that sound like a list of players who 'aren't as talented'?

You hit a lot of posts when you take a lot of shots. Some seasons it goes in more often, and you have a higher shooting percentage. Other seasons, it doesn't go as well and your shooting percentage is lower.

Why is that difficult to understand?
Actually, hitting the post has no impact on shooting percentage, since those shot attempts are not counted as shots on goal.

Except, if they went in, they would be shots - and goals - and they would certainly affect the shooting percentage.

A few extra posts, instead of goals, is enough to impact the shooting percentage.

Yeah, it would kind of make more sense to analyze shot attempt percentage for skaters. If you shoot wide or hit the post, you still missed.

Whereas for goalies, it doesn't matter, because it wasn't going in anyway. They shouldn't have to add up to 1.

Mangiapane? It's pretty clear to me - He was pushing/driving that extra inch last season and it was the difference many times between a goal and not getting to a puck.

He still plays hard, but not quite at the level as before he scored his first major contract. And those inches of effort at this level are easily the difference between 18 goals and 35.

Doughboy needs to pretend like his nhl career is on the line again and approach his shifts with the same determination

Extension + engagement = complacency. No matter how much he would claim otherwise

76 posts and counting, 15 OTLs and counting.

Is this just a bad luck season, and the Flames are actually good?
