I think some fan's are kind of overstating how successful of a GM he has been during his tenure here. The most successful we have been in his time here (10th season come October) is 2, 2nd round wins in total. One could argue that the 14-15 season where we went to the 2nd round and won a game was a very heavy Jay Feaster led club.

This is a cap team, a GM who has gone through more than enough coaches, made more than enough trades, FA signings and more. He doesn't appear to have been really restricted in any meaningful way.

Let's not forget we also had the Burke/Maloney combo assisting him for years.

I don't want to see him fired but if we don't have a deep playoff run this year, I don't see how him staying on would be the guy to get us to multiple playoff runs and a cup or two?

In finance, Treliving is a classic closet index manager but he is achieving sub par investment returns while looking like an active manager and doing something.

Which GM would you rather have that is currently available? He's a good GM; top quartile for sure.

Treliving is an excellent GM and no one can convince me otherwise.

This is a team that has underachieved in the playoffs, relative to regular season records and the post-deadline rosters. That's on the players and coaches, not on the GM.

I guess I wouldn't consider Tre a BAD GM, Sutter was a bad GM 100% overall. In my personal opinion he is delivery sub par results giving that he doesn't appear to be hamstrung by ownership and has had plenty of time to deliver on some consisting playoff winning and performance.

We can't let the disaster up north and to the west make us feel good. This team and ownership group has been demanding and expecting a serious run for a cup and playoff performance and we really haven't sniffed that.

Regular season performance not withstanding as it's a mixed bag. I was done with Tre last summer with the Chucky and Johnny situation but got back on board with the trade and signings.

I do think he does have a short leash or at least should have one. I know some on CP and even close family and friends think Tre is a top GM in the league and that's totally fine. I do know that the only thing that matters at the end of the day is actually winning championships and playoff performances. That's sports!

If we have a subpar season this year and the next 2 or so, than people will be begging for him to be fired for poor performance. You don't go from Elite performer to a fired bum who doesn't know what he is doing in the eyes of ownership or fans. It's patience that run's out and an understanding that past performance is the best indicator of future performance.

I think Treliving is a good GM, but I think he is in a near impossible situation trying to turn this team into a contender without doing a proper rebuild. It's just an uphill battle I don't see him winning as players get older, other players want pay raises, the team has no top end picks or elite prospects, little cap space, etc. With the moves they made this summer, the window was always going to be very small, but it seems like they are underperforming in their prime window to win, which is really disappointing. I think I'd only move on from Tre if you could find a better replacement, but I'm not sure that person is out there. And even if you do find someone better, I feel like they will be in a very similar situation as Tre finds himself in now. I'd actually try a new coach first to see if you could get more out of this group.

I'm on the fence, but overall I think he's done better than not, but it's close to the line for me.

I'll wait it out to see what he does with getting us a top 9 forward to throw into the group, or whatever tinkering he does with lines/potential. If that's good...then he gets extended for a short bit. He made a mess, largely cleaned it up, but it may take a couple of years to determine if that's true. He deserves to be here while that plays out.

Lots to look back at but at the time did anyone see the season he had coming? He was on the second line in camp because how bad he was the previous seasons. He had some serious questions surrounding his off ice training and nutrition.
I was just taking your bizarre timeline. Your original timeline was the three seasons before last. You were clearly wrong in what you said, as he was a PPG player over those three seasons. You then picked a different timeline. Bottom line is yes, I would have signed him. Not sure where you are getting your numbers from (9-10 million) but I would have signed him. But we did not.

Seems like majority on here favor yes. I'm going to say no please no.

For me I feel like he only does good when he's reactive and forced to make a move. Such as getting Lindy and Hanifin because something sour was going on with Hamilton and Fox didn't want to sign here. A lot of his proactive moves have been awful, from long contracts to free agents which not a lot have aged well and some current might not either. He keeps bringing in players we don't need because his constant worry about "depth" (Forbort, Fantenberg, Rooney, Pitlick, Simon, etc to name a few). Because of this we either don't get to let young guys come up to sink or swim, and almost lost Kylington for nothing. His inability to hire a stable bench boss wasted a few good years of having a really good roster. Trading away picks like candy, and on top of it poor cap management.

For me I would prefer a new GM that has a different vision. Treliving still stuck in the Burke mould of "big is good" and that's it feels like that's always going to be that way with him. Most guys we draft or get are always "hard workers" or "great characters" or "score goals in dirty areas" type players but rarely do we get "skilled" or "speedy". It's time for a change.

I think Treliving has done a terrific job but if the contract is more than 2 years which I expect it will be my vote is no.

He built his team he solidified it if that doesn't get it done we need to look else where.

I think you start looking now for a rebuild GM as opposed to a GM that has looked to inherit something we can find someone better which is what this team is going to need shorty.

I'm in the "extend Treliving" group. I think too much is being made about the fact that he's not signed yet, as it was established during his last extension that Edwards likes to make people wait when it comes to these matters, and leaves these things for the off-season.

It's just my opinion, but I believe the Sutter hire was an Edwards move, and not a Tre move. I wonder if Tre plans to go to an organization where he has more autonomy, and if that's the case- I don't blame him. If he leaves, there will be a lineup for his services- and I've read the rumours of Tre being the next choice for Leafs GM.

Hopefully, there are no plans to make Darryl the next GM, as it would be a disaster. I don't think that Maloney would be the trainwreck that most are saying it would be, though. He was GM of the year in 2010, he's served with some very good people, and has a lot of respect around the league. I think some just remember his last few years with the Coyotes.

What are you basing top quartile on? Certainly not team success as there's lots of teams that have similar or better regular season success and plenty with better playoff success. The prospect base is really bleak and I can't be the only one that gets pretty depressed watching the world juniors seeing a lot of great young talent drafted by the rest of the league. He's sold out the future for mediocrity and we are left to cheer for a win now team playing .500 hockey. I will cut him some slack here as we will never know if he truly wanted to go this direction and if it's more that he's just been following ownership orders.

He's made some great moves and some terrible moves and his coaching hires have been horrible outside of Sutter and I'm not sure that he's even Treliving's guy. The results have been largely disappointing as the team for the most part has been on a perennial trend of good season, bad season and in the good season the results haven't been there in the playoffs. Over his tenure the Flames have trended pretty similar to the Oilers as since 2014:

-Both teams have had 2 x 100 point seasons
-Oilers playoffs 4 times, Flames playoffs 5 times
-Both teams have advanced to the 2nd round twice
-Oilers advanced to the Conference finals, Flames have not

Even this season the teams are neck and neck and will likely be all the way through the season. I'm just not sure if trending alongside the Oilers is a good thing and certainly not worthy of a top quartile GM. As I have said many times, he's not amongst the worst and he's not amongst the best and I suppose that mirrors the Flames plight over his tenure. I do feel that a lot of other GM's operate under better circumstances where they have more autonomy and don't have to deal with silly owner mandates of making the playoffs at all costs every season. Maybe if he goes to Toronto we will see if he's truly a top GM or not.

i feel like there are reasons to extend him and reasons not to.

i'd say he might be considered a top quartile GM because he was able to turn tkacuk into tangible assets

but with all that said, the best the team has done is get to round 2 and this season the team is consistently inconsistent

it would be nice if the flames could sign him to a two year deal

Looking at Trees body of work during his tenure, I say extend . Can't think of many other people who could navigate the last 4 years as he has.

If he were GM of some of the US teams or the Toronto's team he would have more success and more popularity. I think to be a smaller Canadian team GM is harder than the big US teams GM. If he is not signed yet, may be he will go to those teams.

But I hope he and his father buy Calgary flames and he become owner and GM.
