Looks like the determining factor was related to the idea that if you had control, you would have been the next person to touch it
It’s really not that complicated

No, that isn't the issue. And the Blue didn't touch it, though his stick did hit McDavid's stick before McDavid touched it again - further solidifying the fact that McDavid didn't have possession.
The rule/issue is whether or not you have possession when the puck crosses the line. McDavid lifted his stick off the puck, and didn't touch it again until he was 6-10 ft inside the blueline (and the Blue's stick hit his and almost hit the puck during that time. Pretty straight-forward call IMO.
What was hilarious, was watching SportsNet afterwards. They were whining about possession, and how if you are in possession, then it isn't offside. Then they brought up the Makar goal from the playoffs to support their case.
So they show the Makar goal, and whatshisname says '
that was a goal' all sarcastically and pouty.
Yes, it was a goal BECAUSE HE DIDN'T HAVE POSSESSION because his stick was off the puck. EXACTLY the same call as last night. But everyone is too upset to seethe facts.
