Sutter is a genius coach, legend of his time and brilliant hockey mind. But anyone is capable of a misstep and that was one for him. Incredibly unprofessional in media facing venue for a professional sports organization and league to make that type of comment, whatever his intent was. Didn't look good on him.
I don't think it's something that should be derailing the team but I can see why it may have rubbed some people the wrong way. Hopefully it isn't a big deal, but that with some of the other critical comments he seems to have made about Huberdeau, its not like the scrutiny about the situation is coming from nowhere. Let's hope it is all just overblown.

I thought it was funny. I actually like his odd ball sense of humour and strange mannerisms. I guess my office is more fun than the rest of you if that comment got you worked up.

Oh I agree his press conferences are hilarious. But we don’t work for him and we don’t have private channels of communication with him that is the part of the picture we don’t see. I am guessing from comments from Huberdeau about him not talking with Sutter or knowing which line he’d come back to that their communication in private is pretty disfunctional. If you’re having problems connecting with your boss and then he says this well I don’t think it helps.
Exactly. But Sutter, for whatever reason, decided that was the time to take a thinly veiled shot at the player through the media.
And if it wasn't that, what was it exactly?
I don't think it was a thinly veiled shot at the player. I thought it was more of a shot at the media. Sutter repeatedly asked reporters to not ask him about injuries, and whoever is going to be in the starting lineup. I thought it was his way of making sure there won't be anymore questions like that, at least in that presser.

Might have been. But if that was the case I would suggest that maybe Sutter does not have the understanding of the media, and by extension social media, that he once did. Times have changed.
if a man can be canceled for that then we all should be
it's good when people drop quotes like that (that are unconventional but don't actually cross a line) just to expose the thin skin of people nowadays . sure it was lowbrow for media talk but he didn't say anything racist/hateful or personally insulting . and such responses as yours show just how much we need to stop being brats with a narrow tolerance for anything outside of what we're accustomed to
people are going to say things you like or don't like . you can judge or scold them for it but you don't get to decide someone should be censored just because something is mildly inappropriate . the world is better with variety whether we agree with all of it or not .. otherwise we just become beat down into submission like sheep without any authenticity or personality
Sutter can make amends with huberdeau behind closed doors and that's good enough for me

I don’t think that’s happening. Huberdeau has already said to the media that Sutter and him don’t talk. Pro tip, if you’re not going to bond with your players than don’t embarrass them in public.

Having watched Sutter closely for 20 years, I think it was a coach trying to shift the narrative and take some attention of the players relatively dismal performance and put it squarely on his own shoulders.
It may not have worked, but he isn't a malicious person that would take veiled shots. He would simply call Huberdeau out if he wanted to.

all coaches and players should just talk about giving 110% from now on obviously
and we wonder why Canadian teams never win
this is such a nothing story...at the time he said it Calgary had a really good record and nobody really cared. Now weeks later with the team below expectations its the biggest thing.

grasping at straws to explain the woes of the team when the hard truth isn't as dramatic and can't just be pinned on one person
the need or tendency to vilify and scapegoat is a worse look than the quote itself within the context of that game when things were going well .. remember too the initial response to that here was that it was funny
Yeah honestly I know this fan base likes to slag on the Oilers media / fan base...but honestly feel like the media and fan base here is becoming toxic like the Vancouver fan base / media which is 1000x worse than the homers up in Edmonton.

That's the thing. Most people were thinking it would take a while to find chemistry. Now that very thing is happening and it's suddenly a disaster. I'm glad it's Sutter here to guide it versus nearly any other possible coach.
