It worst it’s a bit annoying because it feels out of place, but not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. If the Flames were on a winning streak people would be less irritable I’m sure, and Kadri himself is playing pretty well so thats a plus.

The diversity angle itself is a questionable concept. There are a thousand players in the NHL and they are all individuals and unique.

I agree with it entirely.
PBP is very hard to be good at....no question.
However, SN (or whatever network is carrying games) like the NHL itself, is NOT where you develop your skills. It is for finished products.
Singh is far from being a finished product, and that is where I have issues with his calling games in English. I cannot comment on his punjabi calls because i do not know the language. Though I suspect he was excellent at it.
So when "inclusion/forced diversity" or whatever term is used for Harnyryan to be calling NHL games, and the quality of the product suffers because of it, then there is truly no point to it. Makes zero sense to me because he is not likely drawing new fans that didnt follow the punjabi broadcasts, the product is not as good as it should be for anyone else tuning in, and I assume other more qualified people are not allowed to practice their abilities as there is one less spot to do so.
He is just not a very good PBP guy when using the english language.

Maybe Singh doesn’t like Kadri and is butchering his name intentionally out of spite.

Diversity hiring isn't some hidden agenda. It's an explicit goal.

My only input is this… I was in the room during the production meeting where the team discussed the pronunciation of his name and that Received Pronunciation apparently came from the player himself. Whether it had a degree of separation or two before it reached the production team, I am not sure. But the whole production side was told “Nah” and “Cad” (like Cadbury’s). Beesley, to his great credit, tried it out a few times to get it just right… and he nailed it. Cheers all!

I think Singh is certainly on par with many of his NHL peers. I think he does a fine job. Not as good as Ball, but as good as many other PBP guys in the league. And better than some (like the Edmonton hack).

I think most people find it a bit out of left field or distracting, maybe? But I think the real reason this thread is here, is because our team is #### right now and we’re looking at everything negatively.

I think a lot of good points have been made by those who dislike Singh's pronunciation of Kadri's name, but this a pretty ignorant assertion. Kadri and Singh have both been quite vocal about their own real experiences in hockey and how they were deeply affected as a result of their cultural distinctions. While yes, NHL players "are all individuals and unique," there is no question that within a sport that has been dominated by white North Americans and Europeans for over a hundred years the treatment of minorities has been a real problem. But given your reproachable posting history, I don't expect you to do anything but continue to bury your head in the sand when confronted by these matters.

Everyone sucks at play by play. In the HD big screen TV era you can just see who has the puck and whats happening. I wish I could have the natural rink noise.
Most times i turn the game way down and put on music.

Yeah, this is true. I still really like hearing play-by-play, though. Maybe it's nostalgia, or just familiarity? Given the choice I will always turn the game-sound on, but I don't actually miss anything by having it off.

Same here, a few times when the PBP audio stream went down it felt like I was way less engaged. I prefer subpar PBP over nothing. It's a true blessing to have Ball though. Miss him a lot.

Arabic speaker here.
Further to a point made way earlier in this thread the "K" sound is not silent in any dialect in Arabic. It is most usually pronounced as a "K" as it would be in English. However, Kadri's last name should actually be transliterated into Qadri if he was to be as accurate as possible. The "Q" in Arabic is pronounce a whole bunch of different ways throughout the arab world. The propper and classical pronunciation is a guttural, "k" sound similar to the the "c" is "cought", but a little harder and more throaty.
The way the "Q" its pronounced in Lebanon, where Nazem is from is indeed just a silent letter. So it would just be 'Adri. However, when it comes to proper names, it's considered incorrect to pronounce them with a dialect, however, most people in Lebanon don't care and would pronounce it as 'Adri.
Similar to that, most Palestinian dialects do the same this with the letter "Q", however Al-Quds (the arabic name for Jerusalem) would be pronounced just as its written. The lebanese, however, call it "el-'uds".

Sometimes I like to listen in French so that I can really hear names be mispronounced.

This is actually a really interesting discussion. Ultimately, I found Singh changing his Kadri pronunciation a bit jarring. If it is actually the correct/preferred way to pronounce Kadri then I would be fine with it. I also felt the change of saying Giordano a bit jarring, but after it was clear that it was correct and everybody should say it that way, it felt normal.
The takes on diversity I think show the Horseshoe Theory of politics. The extreme side of the tolerance and inclusion group have some similarities in thinking with the extreme side that thinks some nefarious diversity agenda is being forced upon us. Lumping a Punjabi Sikh together with a Middle Eastern Muslim is pretty weird. If there was a Thai NHL player, it would be weird if people thought that I as a Chinese person would have special insight into how to pronounce his name. It would be even weirder if I pronounced the name with a Chinese accent and people thought I was "honoring" Thai heritage, since we are both Asian and can be lumped together.

Sigh, this blew way the hell up.
To me it's just Jarring. Like I said when I first heard Singh do it, you hear something for 10 years said one way then all of a sudden out of the blue one person out of hundreds changes it, it sounds off.
Out of curiosity, are there phonetic similarities between Punjab and Arabic? I'm genuinely curious.
Edit: like from a linguistic perspective are the two languages based off of a similar foundation. Like how English, German, Spanish, Italian, French and Portugese all built off of Latin?
Or the Slavic Dialects?
