Its really funny seeing all of these people who were right there watching the whole thing happen over years and saying:
"We couldnt believe it!"
Why?
They've done the same thing with tons of other tournaments...the only difference here is that they did 2 at once.
Because of course they did. These are all really, really old dudes, they are ageing out of their prime grifting years, so they doubled up.

Weren't South Africa and Brazil sort of corrupt too? I mean continents were chosen in advanced. Glad the 'rotation' is gone.

pretty much every World Cup in this century has seen some sort of corruption. I think Brazil was relatively clean, given that they were the only nation to apply for the World Cup in the first place. Germany 2006 was much worse.

False.
Germany 2006 was also great in terms of the actual tournament. France 98 had some great perfomances and star power too. 2002 was poor and rigged. 2010, 2014, and 2018 were just average.

Eighteen years old.
Called up for the World Cup.
No thanks.

Writing on his Instagram story, Volpato explained the reasons behind his decision to reject Australia’s call up for the World Cup.
“I’ve seen lots of speculation about decisions I have supposedly taken at international level: the truth is that I am still just at the start of my professional career and I am totally focused on continuing that process at Roma.
“Making any sort of rushed decision about my international future at this early stage risks being extremely premature.
“There will be plenty of time for me to take the decision that feels right for me, but right now I know my focus needs to be on continuing to work hard each and every day in order to continue improving as a player. For now, it’s time to focus on the game against Sassuolo!”

Truth is he wants to play for Italy.

Those traits will surprise.

Maybe, but it's a tough call. Ask Gianvinco about the poltics of how Federations, coaches, press and fans can run hot and cold on you and how quickly you can fall out of favour in playing for Italy and really anywhere in Europe... continent is littered with players hoping to play for their home country and sacrificing other opportunities.

Giovinco wasnt every really good enough for italy to feature consistently, he had a nice two year run, 1 at Parma and then back at juve, otherwise he was squad player level for them.
For volpato, chances are he wont become a regular for italy, but the risk v reward in his own mind makes sense here. Australia is always gonna be there, he kept his response diplomatic so that it is. If hes not in the senior squad in 4 years for Italy, he probably commits to australia. So for him, missing 1 world cup is worth the chance of potentially a career of world cups and euros
I should have been clearer on the hail mary, that was for this year, they will definitely push for him more going forward

Bit of a gamble for him.
He's born and bred Aussie.

Interesting to see you guys discussing this.
As an Aussie, I think it's disappointing but it is what it is. Maybe if he tries his luck for 2026 and it doesn't work out he comes back to us.

Tomori not in the England squad, such a shame he didn't choose Canada.

I understand the desire to play for England and other top football nations, but I've always thought for players who aren't top 20 or even 30 or 40 in their country... go play for the country (if you're able to) that you have the best chance to get on! International play is never a guarantee, so maximize your ability to do so. Just my opinion though.

I remember there was some speculation not that long ago that it was still possible for him to flip to Canada if desired because of a few convoluted FIFA rules about the age in which he played his first games for England? Seemed like there was never any consensus reached on whether that was true or not. Hopefully there is a hail mary chance with him still if this omission leaves a bad taste in his mouth. That would be a game changing move for the program.

Hmmm I wonder what made USA 94 and Germany 2006 such memorable and exciting tournaments....could it be because Italy made the finals in both tournaments? It can't be a coincidence....In all honesty, Germany 2006 was the best tournament in my lifetime, not just because Italy won, but there were also many memorable matches and storylines. I'm sorry, but there is just something more magical about Europe hosting the tournament. France 98 was also good, Italy 90 as well. The absolute worst ones were 2002 and 2010.
I'm highly expecting this years tournament to be a flop as well. Hoping for Qatar to be humiliated and embarrassed in all their matches. I also hope the world wakes up and sees just how corrupt FIFA and the country of Qatar really are. I hope they are exposed and that anyone travelling there can see the country for the ####show that it really is.
