Oh for sure they know the name, but how many just knew the mediocre color guy and not the excellent 80s scorer. As a younger fan, I was stunned the first time I learned he was once such a dominant player.

Fun read ...
Was going to say Ogrodnik but beaten to it.
I'll add Bernie Federko. 1000 games, almost 400 goals but no clue outside of St. Louis
Someone mentioned Guy Chouinard, but he was certainly Calgary's entry.

A few guys who come to mind...
1. Adam Oates (in the HOF but I don't think people realize how good he was)
2. Craig Janney
3. Pierre Turgeon
4. Brian Bellows
5. Vincent Damphousse
6. Kirk Muller (up until 93-94 he might have been one of the most underrated players in the league--his offense really dried up after he left MTL--league changed too.)
7. Pat Verbeek

I always thought Guy Chouinard was one of our biggest stars in the early days of the Calgary Flames. His #16 was my first NHL jersey.
Jamie Macoun with his crazy +/- stats on the 80s Flames was always an underrated piece.

Butch Goring was the X-factor for my childhood Islanders teams.

This entry may be disqualified because Mark Howe is in the HHOF, but his Dad is Gordie, so Mark slips under the radar quite a bit.
WHA; 6 years, 426 GP, 504 pts
NHL; 16 years, 929 GP, 742 pts
He was also impaled by the center part of the net which almost ended is career, and he sued the NHL for a bad net design which led to a new design losing that center "spike".
Edit; Middleton and Goring have both been mentioned, but would have definitely made my list. Loved those guys. Tim Kerr as well

A few players being mentioned are legends or near legends of the game. Guys like Sawxhuk and Cheevers.
Loob would be on this list outside of Calgary.
How about Blaine Stoughton? Two 50 goal seasons.

I started reading this thread and he was one of the first names that came to mind.
Too bad back injuries derailed his career.
I would like to bring up Rick Vaive. He had nine consecutive 30 goal seasons including three consecutive 50 goal seasons in the middle of that streak. All while playing for lackluster teams, mostly the Toronto Maple Leafs of the early/mid 80s.

Bernie Nicholls not only for his 1209 pts in 1127 games but also 1292 pen minutes.
From 83 to 89 he was lights out especially the year flames won the cup, 70 goals and 80 assists for 150 points only 49 shy of Mario!
But for some reason he had a brain fart in 91 which lasted 2 seasons!
P.S. Oh and as a bonus I believe he was one of Sutter's assistants in 2012 when Kings won the cup

Dennis Maruk has a 60 goal 136 point season. He was great for awhile.

For the amount of points that Peter Statsny put up he sure doesn't get much recognition. You can even include his winger Michel Goulet. They both just scored a lot.

Ed Van Impe. He hit so hard he made the Russians not want to come out for the 3rd period. (Red Army?)

Denis Potvin is in the top handful of defensemen to ever play the game, but no one ever talks about him anymore.
He won three Norris Trophies, 4 Stanley Cups.
He one of only 5 defensemen who scored 100 points in a season.
He could do it all. He could play offense, defense, and he was tough.
For those who saw him play, he is not an under the radar guy. For those who didn't, though, may not realize what a great player he was.

Another great defenseman was Brad Park. His biggest problem was this kid named Bobby Orr who stole all the attention away from him.
