Does anyone remember the name of a coffee shop that was in downtown Calgary in an old build on 1st ST SE between 8th and 9th Ave? It was where the convention center is now just a little north of where Teatro sits. It had steep stairs down to the basement, which is where the coffee shop was?

You ever been to a mall food court? or a Burger King at lunch time within walking distance of a high school? This is not a made up scenario.

Feel free to go check out any fast food restaurant or mall food court or similar that is close to a high school after classes are done for the day. You'll see many large groups of kids hanging out while a couple of the kids actually buy some food and sit at a table as a customer.

Derek.
Guy.
We're talking about coffee shops in the evenings; not fast food restaurants close to high schools during lunch breaks.
I don't mean this to come across as patronizing or belittling in any way, but have you thought of taking one of these tests? It kind of gets thrown around a little too much sometimes because it's the one Trump supposedly "aced" (camera, man, chair, etc.), but you may want to spend a few minutes and run through it just to be sure your cognitive abilities are functioning in a healthy way.
I just went back and re-read your posts in this thread and the way you are understanding the conversation, the concept and - well - everything is genuinely concerning.

Mine basically takes the bus downtown and goes for sushi or ramen with his friends in Kensington or 17th Ave. I think they just need to get away from their familiar neighbourhood and explore somewhere new with friends.

Sounds like your kids are hard workers and enterprising - they should take their hard earned funds and buy fake ID's and go loiter in bars and clubs.

I think it's wholesome as hell that Sliver is actively taking an interest in his kid's lives and encouraging them to do things they like doing. Pretty lame that the two posters who seem too hate teenagers existing in public spaces don't seem to get that.

Thanks man. Of all the things I've said on CalgaryPuck over the past decade or so, I honestly can't believe asking for recommendations on a coffee shop for my kids spurred an ounce of controversy. I was expecting this to be a three-reply thread. This is absolutely nucking futs.

BTW, I've laid out a plan with my kids to investigate the coffee shops suggested by Swift and they're hilariously stoked on their assignment. Gives them a little adventure, gets them exploring the city, and fun #### just seems to happen when you're young and you get out of the house doing wacky stuff. This is perfect, so in spite of the weirdos polluting the thread with abject nonsense, I'm glad I started it because my kids and their friends are going to have a great time doing this.

In fairness, you do say you prefer your threads spicy. It may not have gone how you wanted, but this was more entertaining.

Sliver could have the greatest kids in the city, their friends are likely just as good but a few things to think of.
-Very little good comes out of kids simply hanging around
- Few businesses long for a group teens to hang out for a couple of hours.
-If you’ve spent $7 and are sitting there for hours playing Risk, they (owners/ employees) likely want you to move on.
I just cant get my head around the desire to send your kids and their friends out to needlessly hang around somewhere. Also please remind them that closing time is closing time, not leaving time.

I'm in Bonavista as well, and it's such a shame about our coffee scene. Restaurants and Coffee shops are the only part of Bonavista we find lacking since moving from the core 10 years ago.
DeVille is 'ok' (and we really wanted to love it). Analog is better but it's in South Centre so no ambiance.
We go to Italian Shop for coffees. Still probably only a B- coffee, but it is nice to hang out there.
I'm hoping the coming years has replacements in the Promenade and Fish Creek Village with great coffee shops and more quality restaurants.

A. This is odd. Very odd. Like old man yells at clouds kind of odd.
B. Why is this just kids? There are 80 year olds...20 year olds....45 year olds etc that do this just as well.
Odd. Odd all around...

In fact, while we have a big commercial shopping etc area maybe 10-15min from us by bike, this is making me wish the community I am in had a more inset type of coffee shop, i.e. more right in the residential area, where, get this, I could ....take (send - just getting to the cusp of going on their own) my kids too.
Edit: just really makes me laugh all around, as my kids going to a coffee shop, buying a drink, a snack or two, and, well doing exactly what everyone seems to be doing there.....is awesome for them. They absolutely love that. In fact, I took them to one on the weekend, a drink, a snack and we sat and read books.

There's Analog in the South. Great ambiance and great coffee but holy cow expensive.
I took my two (really young kids) there once and grabbed a coffee, a sandwich and a pastry or two and the total was like $26. Then the machine asks for a tip too.
It's a nice treat but boy that pricing.

Uh oh, now I'm sweating knowing that a gang of teenagers are roaming the city and probably sitting at a coffee shop moaning "Some dickhead on the internet said this would be fun!"
I'm both afraid and curious to know the results of this experiment and their grades.

Derek, this is a you problem. What you're saying doesn't make sense. Nobody is sending their kids to "hang around" anywhere. I want my kids to patronize local independent businesses. Businesses whose sole purpose for existing is to serve patrons in a way 100% consistent with how I intend my kids to use the business. Business owners depend on people frequenting their business to put food on their own table. Why the fata are you trying to dissuade customers from going to small businesses?
Coffee shops have chairs and tables for people to sit. You go to the counter, order a coffee and snack, then go sit at the table. That's how my kids will use the business. Is there another way in which they could support these businesses? No, there isn't, because that's the entire extent of the business model. Buying a drink and a snack and sitting down.
I'm convinced you were dropped on your head as a baby or else you're trolling. Nobody comes out of the womb with as much difficulty grasping basic concepts as you based on your little song and dance here today.
But let's drill a little deeper. You seem to think businesses don't want teenagers? How can you say that and not think it's really dumb to even think that. I went go-karting yesterday. All teens. Ever go to the movies? Half filled with teens. Malls? Teens. Snowboarding/skiing? 1/3 teens. Fast food restaurants? Lotsa teens. Coffee shops? Teens.
People welcome teens. They're just people. We were all teens at some point. Your attitude toward them is despicable, frankly, and super ridiculous.
IDK, man. I'm embarrassed for you. Hopefully this thread dies and we can move on because I've lost all respect for you in it.

Can we all agree to keep this going?
Also I was really hoping someone would remember this besides me:

It was during the late 80's, in fact I'm sure I watched Tiananmen Square happen there

I’m so fricken glad my place is just a few steps down the block from a great cafe so my kid and his friends can go hang out, and they’re not out on some country highway where they have to take a bus with a flashing light on it to get into town.
