I would bug my dad as a kid -- for all the stupid home theatre equipment he'd buy -- why he never bought a Laserdisc player. "What the hell do we need one for, James?" We went from VHS to DVD, which was definitely the right answer, but I've always been an early adopter at heart.
So even today at the age of 37, I have never watched a single movie on Laserdisc, ever. I haven't even seen or held one, I have more experience with 8-track tapes which were already phased out of retail stores by the time I was born, which is weird considering Laserdisc's rise and fall largely happened in the 90s.

We're about the same age, but luckily I had family friends who had a LaserDisc player. (They were also the only people I knew with a Betamax VCR, lol.) As compared to VHS, they were spectacular. Far, far, far better than VHS. Frankly to my untrained eye, the picture on a CRT TV of the time was pretty similar to DVD quality.
The only downsides I remember were:
- The discs could only hold about an hour of video, so most feature releases had to be two-disc (or even three) "albums". You generally had to get up and change discs or flip the disc over halfway through a movie.
- The discs themselves were heavy. Far, far heavier than a CD/DVD/Bluray. By feel, I'd wager they were about twice the weight of a 12" vinyl LP; half a pound or more. Given the weight they were very unwieldy and felt fragile; you had to treat them very very carefully so as not to scratch them. Swapping discs around was a two-hand task.
- The machines themselves were noisy; a lot noisier than CD/DVD/Bluray players. Our friends kept their LaserDisc player in a home entertainment centre with a door on it, with their home stereo equipment, rather than set on top or under the TV on an open credenza or something. (Where a VCR was more typically kept.)

I collect vintage accounting stuff.
I've got an old cheque-press, an antique Texas Instruments calculator that you have to plug into the wall and a couple old adding machines.
I'm thinking about turning my spare office into some sort of museum of accounting antiquities.
I think there might be a tax-dodge in there somewhere too if I play my cards right.

I do not. My collection is organic, I only get what people give me.

How do you handle insurance with regard to large or valuable collections? I've always just assumed home and/or contents insurance was adequate ini the event of some catastrophic loss, but I honestly don't know when it comes to collections I see running into the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars range.
Do people catalogue this stuff, photograph it? A special rider? My sense is that far too many people don't. My buddy has a veritable goldmine in his nerd mecca, and when I asked him about it once the response was a stunned look.

It depends. Home insurance can cover X value of items, so basically you just have to buy stuff as replacement and prove via receipts of what you replaced with in the event of loss. You can pay for personal possession replacements of like $10K to $500K easily without needing pictures tacked onto your home insurance. You just pay a higher premium but I think you'd also have to go through a catastrophic loss of nearly everything. I think insurance also has to remove a damaged physical object in such a case. Flood damaged items, fire damaged etc. I think I set mine from like $50-150K for a few extra hundred per year. It includes stuff like electronics, appliances, clothing, jewelry, generic collectibles and items etc. If you do the math, it adds up fast.
You can also get special riders on certain high value items and then you'll need appraisals, values, pictures etc. This is stuff like jewelry, collectables, antiques etc. But if you do this, individual damage/loss you can claim insurance and I think some you don't need to prove with a physical object, ie: lost jewelry. I've done this too and sent in the requested documentation to insurance.
But it depends. So you'd have to read the insurance coverage carefully.

Hey I've got a couple Wayne Gretzky hockey cards in good condition. Maybe from his second year? Is there a market for something like that or are they a dime a dozen?

I genuinely dont know...so sorry about that.
But my Intern this tax season...his side-hustle is selling collectibles. I did not know that initially, but man...the stuff I've had pass through my office this season has been wild.
Like...original 1977 Star Wars cards, a Darth Vader movie cutout from the original showing...if you give it to me I can pass your information along to him if you want.
But....you have to convince him to sell me the LEGO Millennium Falcon.

It depends on the condition of the card. It has to be perfect with excellent centering to be worth a lot.
I sold a PSA 9 graded 2nd year Gretzky for $6000, but that card looked near perfect. I purchased that card for $300 around 2012.
It's not an especially rare card, but very rare to find in top condition. One thing to consider is that the rough edges on older OPC cards don't necessarily decrease value. So when looking at condition focus more on whether the corners are rounded or bent.
Lower grade versions of that card might be worth $50-300 depending on grade, then they go up substantially once you get to higher grades.

I have three of his rookie card. I got excited when I read someone paid millions for it but quickly realized that was for extremely mint condition. Mine are in fine shape, no visible damage or wrinkles and the corners lol straight.. But I’ve always assumed not worth more than $100 or so.
I have a ton of old hockey and baseball cards. And old comic books. Figured they can get passed down for a generation or two and maybe one day be really worth something.

MLB New Era fitted hats, Hockey Jerseys, baseball jerseys. I once had a goal to have the hat of every MLB team and the jersey of every NHL team. I reached those goals and now find myself having multiple styles and versions. I feel as if I wasn't married with kids and other things to do with my money I would be at full 'The Hockey Guy' on youtube level with every NHL jersey style from every team by now

Any Gretzky rookie card, I would recommend getting graded. If it's an opc card, even if it grades a 3-4 it'll add a lot of value.
Edit: the PSA 3 OPC rookies are going for like $1500. Of it's an opc card make sure you only grade with PSA.
