Almost as if "without Tanev" is an incomplete statement. You put Cale Makar with a #7/#8 defenseman and he would not look as good as he does with Devon Toews.
|
You definitely lost me with the Kylington to Makar comparison.

Exactly. If we didn’t trade Tkachuk for Huberdeau and Weegar and just signed Tkachuk or trades Tkachuk for youth I would be fine with wrapping up OK up for 6 years
The Tkachuk trade changed things and IMO pushed OK down the depth chart. Why buy UFA years for a player who likely is 5th on the depth chart, doesn’t play on the pp or pk? Things changed with the addition of Weegar and I’d rather pay Mangiapane Weegar and Huberdeau

The good news is a great deal just got signed
The bad news is there’s no competent hockey talk to be found this time of year
The good news is we have a local all sports station so they talked about it in hour 2 of “sportsnet today”
https://www.sportsnet.ca/960/sportsn...ntract-flames/
The bad news is there’s no competent hockey talk to be found so our local all sports station uploaded the wrong clip. Whoopsie poopsie fan 960 cheepnis abounds.

I would of tried to sign him longer at a little more money. Buy some ufa years.
You then say he could be leaving a fortune on the table? Sure!
Which is exactly why I would of liked a longer term contract.
What was offered I do not know. You dont know either.
Yet this walks the player right to UFA status.
I am not bad mouthing the player or the team or you.
I would of liked to sign him longer.
You dont say if you agree or disagree with me. You say he would want more money? I am sure he would.
What are we debating?
I would like to know.

I bet Cale Makar would still look amazing beside a scrub.

I didn't read Jiri's post as attacking your view.
Buying UFA years probably means a 4 or 5 year contract starts with a 4. Tre can't pay a guy that much money coming off 30 points in 70 NHL games. He was not good in the playoffs sans Tanev, which could indicate that his output was more Tanev than Kylington finding his game.
Personally, I was hoping he'd sign between $2M and $2.5M, basically the "Sam Bennett show me contract."
Sam showed very little, probably needed a change of scenery and that's what he got. Oliver is in a very similar situation.

Cheaper by a bit than his current value as it's only 2 years and walks him to UFA. Fair contract for both really. In navigating the teams priorities this was a smart deal.

Was hoping for $2.25, expecting $2.5, fearing higher. Good deal.
Kylington has tools, but the bottom line is that he has put up less than 1 season of good hockey, no way you give a guy like that a long term deal. If he continues to progress, pay him. If he doesn't, no harm, no foul.

Kylington and Phillips are two I've had unreasonably high expectations since watching their opening prospect camp highlights.
Erik Karlsson 2.0 and Right Shot Gaudreau respectively

I think this is absolutely right. He needs to prove that he can be an NHLer without having an ideal partner like Tanev before he justifies more $$/term.
