Apparently my land has just caught fire west of the City. Firefighters have arrived - hopefully they'll be able to keep a handle on it.

Awfully dry for the beginning of May.

My intuition is that we have better odds of bio-engineering our way to coping with higher temperatures (drought-resistant crops, etc) than we do of reducing greenhouse gas emissions on a scale and timeline sufficient to halt the warming trend.

Let’s hope the arson investigators don’t check CP user names.

In all seriousness, I hope you don’t lose anything of value, and more importantly everyone is ok.

I’d go with unilateral Geo-engineering through aerosols by Musk, Bezos and Gates

Lol, i never thought of that lol... good thing i had bulletproof alibis today.

We only had about a half acre of pasture burn and neighbours on the N and W sides lost a little bit more than that each. No injuries or any structures involved thankfully.

But its a little concerning that we are having to worry about grass fires the first week of May...

one thing I didn't think of until now is as the water levels lower, all the bodies will start showing up.

Human remains found in barrel as Lake Mead drops to historic low amid drought
https://www.latimes.com/california/s...l-at-lake-mead

A barrel containing human remains was discovered in Nevada’s Lake Mead over the weekend as a historic drought grips the West.

Las Vegas Metro Police fear they will find more bodies, officials told a local news station.
Based on personal items found in the barrel, police think it has been at the bottom of the lake since the 1980s.

Whereas global warming causes reservoirs like Lake Mead to drop, it also causes polar ice caps and glaciers to melt and raise the sea level.

Won't find a body in the ocean if the ocean keeps rising...

The Fort McMurray fires started in the first week of May

At least we have some rain coming our way over the next week which should help the situation somewhat.

Floods might be more of a concern this year. Still lots of snow pack, and it has been a cooler spring.

the water crisis isn't just the Colorado river basin either, this is Lake Oroville in northern California, it's down 45% of capacity, Shasta Lake is about the same.

Why even still have a boat in that puddle? It's just sad

It seems like 2015 was a similar drought year, but things bounced back after?

You can see from the shoreline that is still massively below previous levels, and I would presume that September is the low point of the year for water level, and February has the benefit of spring run-off.

Various governments have to get in front of this quickly. There is a thread dedicated to it somewhere (the eastern slopes mining issue in Alberta), but the States (Montana and North Dakota) are starting to take notice of the potential fallout from decreased volume and quality of source water. The northern parts of both of those states rely heavily on the Milk River.

I’m thinking the water level in that lake/reservoir is not an area that any of us are knowledgeable on. It seems to be wildly variable.

^^ Yeah, the lake/reservoir has been as low or lower in the past. Without more context, we can't really jump to conclusions. I am thinking the time of year has to be part of the concern. Being May, you would think the levels would be highest, then drop by September. That's my assumption anyway, could be wrong.
